<br>Ki-Tisa 5782: “Don’t worry, be happy!”<br>

The famous song’s refrain is almost correct: we ''do'' need to be “happy”, as I’ll discuss further. But what does that mean, and how can we achieve it? 

In this week’s Torah portion, the Israelites become distressed that Moshe “disappeared”. They assumed he wasn’t returning, so they had Aaron create a “golden calf” to be “their god” to lead them. Subsequently, [https://mechon-mamre.org/p/pt/pt0232.htm#6 “…the people sat down to eat and to drink, and rose up to make merry”]. They indulged their appetites, allowed their emotions free reign, and engaged in orgiastic idolatrous behavior (see ''Rashi'' there, and ''Midrash Tanḥuma'').

They were “happy” in a commonly used sense: they had fulfilled their immediate desires. But this clearly wasn’t the form of happiness God desired, since they were severely punished for it.

Rambam states as ''halakha'' that a prophet only prophecies [https://mechon-mamre.org/i/1107n.htm#8 from within a state of happiness]. This is hinted at by the fact that Jacob our forefather was known as “Israel” when he prophesied. When he thought Joseph had died, he became “clinically depressed” and didn’t prophesy until after he realised his son was still alive. 

You might rightfully object that Jeremiah, who prophesied the destruction of the Temple (and, indeed, of the Judean kingdom), couldn’t possibly have been “happy” when receiving these prophesies. In fact, he was very obviously worried and distressed. So if he was “happy” enough to prophesy, surely it cannot mean he was “well pleased”. What, then, is the “happiness” we need to achieve?

When it comes to the Festivals, we are [https://mechon-mamre.org/i/3608n.htm#12 obligated to be happy]. There, Rambam explains that “the happiness one achieves by fulfilling the commandments and through love of God Who commanded them is a very great act of worship…”. In other words, the very act of performing God’s commandments with the right attitude produces a state of happiness. In [https://mechon-mamre.org/i/3406n.htm#17 another place], he says that “One who locks his doors and eats and drinks and doesn’t feed the poor and downtrodden; that is not the happiness of performance of a commandment, but rather just his stomach’s bliss”. The inclusion of others in one’s fulfillment of obligations to God, where possible, leads to happiness of the right kind.

In that light, Jeremiah being able to prophecy “happily” is more understandable. He was whole-hearted in his fulfilment of the commandments, and thus attained a level conducive to receiving prophetic visions. His happiness was not dependent on his particular physical situation, but rather a result of his complete devotion to God. He tried to awaken his fellows to the imminent danger they were in, though he was not successful.

Our portion’s Israelites suffered from a lack of understanding. They thought Moses was not returning. They thought they needed a physical representation of God. They thought physical happiness was a path to ecstatic revelation. They thought self-indulgence in their form of religious service would be acceptable.

They were wrong. And so too are we if we follow their materialistic example. 

The song was right to say, “be happy”, but wrong about “don’t worry”. We should indeed worry, and try to achieve that level of happiness which comes with assiduously pursuing knowledge of God and fulfillment of His commandments.

השיר המפורסם ההוא כמעט נכון: אכן צריכים להיות ”שמחים“, כמו שאברר בהמשך. אבל מה הכוונה, וכיצד משיגים את זה?

בפרשתנו השבוע, בני ישראל נכנסים ללחץ כי משה ”נעלם“. הם חשבו שלא יחזור, ולכן ביקשו מאהרן לצור להם עגל זהב שישרת להם כאלוה. לאחר מכן, [https://mechon-mamre.org/p/pt/pt0232.htm#6 וַיַּשְׁכִּימוּ, מִמָּחֳרָת, וַיַּעֲלוּ עֹלֹת, וַיַּגִּשׁוּ שְׁלָמִים; וַיֵּשֶׁב הָעָם לֶאֱכֹל וְשָׁתוֹ, וַיָּקֻמוּ לְצַחֵק]. הם התירו את תאוותיהם, נתנו לריגשיהם להשתולל, והשתתפו בפריצות ועבודה זרה (ראו רש״י ומדרש תנחומה). 

היו ”שמחים“ במובן הנפוץ: הגשימו את הרצונות המידיים שלהם. אבל ברור שלא זה סוג השמחה שה' חפץ בה, כי קיבלו על כך עונש כבד.

רמב״ם מביא להלכה שנביא מתנבא [https://mechon-mamre.org/i/1107n.htm#8 רק מתוך מצב של שמחה]. יש רמז לכך מתוך העובדה שיעקב אבינו נקרא ”ישראל“ כשניבא. כשחשב שבנו יוסף מת, נכנס לדיכאון עמוק ולא ניבא על שלא הבין שבנו עודנו חי.

אולי תאמר, בצדק, שאי אפשר שירמיהו, שניבא על חורבן הבית (ואף של הממלכה היהודית), היה יכול להיות ”שמח“ שקיבל את הנבואות האלה. ובאמת, הוא היה מאד מודאג ובמצוקה נפשית. אז אם היה מספיק ”שמח“ כדי לנבא, ברור שהכוונה בכך אינה שהיה ממש מרוצה. מהיא, אם כן, ה״שמחה״ שצריכים להשיג?

כשמדובר ברגלים, [https://mechon-mamre.org/i/3608n.htm#12 יש חובה לשמוח]. שם, רמב״ם מסביר: ”שֶׁהַשִּׂמְחָה שֶׁיִּשְׂמַח אָדָם בַּעֲשִׂיַּת הַמִּצְווֹת וּבְאַהֲבַת הָאֵל שֶׁצִּוָּה בָּהֶן, עֲבוֹדָה גְּדוֹלָה הִיא…“. כלומר, העשייה עצמה של מצוות ה' עם הגישה הנכונה, מפיקה מצב של שמחה. [https://mechon-mamre.org/i/3406n.htm#17 ובמקום אחר], הוא אומר: ”אֲבָל מִי שֶׁנּוֹעֵל דַּלְתוֹת חֲצֵרוֹ וְאוֹכֵל וְשׁוֹתֶה הוּא וּבָנָיו וְאִשְׁתּוֹ, וְאֵינוּ מַאֲכִיל וּמַשְׁקֶה לָעֲנִיִּים וּלְמָרֵי נֶפֶשׁ--אֵין זוֹ שִׂמְחַת מִצְוָה, אֵלָא שִׂמְחַת כְּרֵסוֹ“. הכללת הזולת בעשיית מצוותיך, כשהדבר ניתן, מוביל לשמחה הרצויה.

לאור זאת, אפשר להבין איך ירמיהו היה יכול לנבא ”בשמחה“. הוא היה שלם ותמים בקיום מצוות ה', ובכך הגיע לרמה המאפשרת נבואה. השמחה שלא לא הייתה תלויה במצבו הפיזי, אלא תוצאה מהתמסרות שלמה שלו לה'. הוא ניסה לעורר את חבריו לסכנה הקרובה לבוא, למרות שלא הצליח.

בני ישראל שבפרשתנו סבלו מחוסר הבנה. חשבו שמשה לא יחזור. חשבו שהיו זקוקים להדגמה מוחשית של האל. חשבו ששמחה פיזית תוביל להתגלות אקסטטית. חשבו שפינוק עצמי מוגזם במעשי הפולחן שלהם יהיה מקובל.

הם טעו. וכך גם אנחנו, אם נלך אחר דוגמתם המטריאליסטית. 

השיר צדק באומרו ”היה שמח“, אבל לא כשאמר ”אל תדאג“. צריכים לדאוג באמת, ולנסות להשיג את רמת השמחה שבאה בעקבות מרדף נמרץ לדעת את ה', וקיום מצוותיו.
