New page

{{blog}} {{comment|April 29th}}

Back to our usual schedule.

We spent Sunday morning quickly returning our kitchen to its “year-round” mode, and I once again praise the foresight and generosity of my wife, who made me purchase a hand-cart! The savings in back-pain was substantial.

Other than that not insignificant effort, we spent the week getting back to a normal work schedule. Both of us were fairly inundated with work, and didn’t have a lot of time for other things.

I did spend some time replacing 8th’s [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Transport_Layer_Security “TLS” library], which also includes a new cryptographic library (which I haven’t yet incorporated). The common wisdom in security circles is that “you should never roll your own cryptography”. True enough! But sometimes you can’t rely on well-established libraries either. To wit: a Java [https://www.schneier.com/blog/archives/2022/04/java-cryptography-implementation-mistake-allows-digital-signature-forgeries.html cryptography implementation mistake] allows ''digital-signature forgeries''. This is a major issue; and even though I am not affected directly, it highlights the need to be vigilant and constantly review application security. As I do.

What can you believe?
* Prof. Strassler asks: “The Earth goes around the Sun? [https://profmattstrassler.com/2022/04/28/earth-goes-around-the-sun-whats-your-best-evidence/ What’s Your Best Evidence?]”. Another in his series of thought-provoking science lessons.
* Matt Walsh’s very, very, serious! take on how [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HcLeUDXZj44 Amazon employees are traumatized] by his children’s book.
* Mallen Baker discusses what [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Uc7BL0NWF7o ''really'' runs the world], that we never talk about!
* A cops-eye view of [https://bariweiss.substack.com/p/a-cops-eye-view-of-seattles-undoing Seattle’s undoing]. So glad we got out when we did.
* After the [https://www.piratewires.com/p/elon-takes-twitter Musk buyout of Twitter], all Left-non-conforming people seem to have seen their “followers” increase. Even I did, much to my surprise.
* And: can Elon Musk [https://konstantinkisin.substack.com/p/can-elon-make-twitter-great-again?s=w make Twitter great again]? The author has his doubts.

The meltdown in the Twitterverse has been spectacularly amusing. Musk hasn’t even done a single thing (since he’s not yet the official owner of Twitter), and the rivers of salty tears have cleansed the streets of Silicon Valley. It’s truly a glorious moment in internet history; but as Kisin points out: Musk has his work cut out for him.

We’ve had warmer than usual, though not super hot weather this week. But a mini heat-wave is coming in just for the weekend, so we’ll enjoy the A/C this ''shabbat''.

Our menu this ''shabbat'' includes:<br>
home-made ''ḥalla'',
Moroccan lemon-olive chicken,
roasted butternut-squash,
various salatim,
and some kind of dessert.<br>

Until next time,<br>
''shabbat shalom''!
