New page

{{blog}} {{comment|Apr 10th}}

Despite the occasional incoming-alarms, we had a generally pleasant week, including the last ''yom-ṭov'' of ''pesaḥ''. We exited ''yom-ṭov'' to find out a “temporary cease-fire” had been imposed by Trump. I only hope his “two-week” cease-fire is intended to allow us and the US to resupply, rearm, and prepare for the next phase!

I’m quite certain it will last, at most, about as long as it takes all that ''pesaḥ'' food to digest. In fact, Hezbollah have decided to take up some of the slack, and last night sent a missile towards Tel Aviv.

During the “intermediary days” I nevertheless managed to make a “first draft” of my English translation of (one book of) the ''Mishne-Torah''. The result [https://mechon-mamre.org/i/en/0.htm is over here], and I’m open to constructive criticisms. Don’t be shy!

A small AI anecdote: I’m using ChatGPT to do preliminary “heavy-lifting” on my translation project. It does an “OK” job, though I need to do a lot of editing afterwards. That said, it saves me a lot of drudgery, but I need to upload each file separately. So I asked it if I could, instead, upload a ZIP file with my files and have it process each one in order and send me a link to the finished product.

It said: “Yes, that’s actually the best way to proceed with your workflow! Upload a ZIP and I’ll process it as you requested”. I uploaded the ZIP with a few files and never heard back from it. I asked, “What’s going on”? It said, “I haven’t started yet”. “But you said, ‘processing...’ 20 minutes ago”! “Yeah, I didn’t actually start because XYZ”…

In short: ChatGPT lies ''to your face'', without any semblance of shame. I’m thinking it would make an excellent politician.

We successfully transitioned our kitchen back to “normal” on Thursday. Though Esther had only taken out a relatively small portion of our ''pesaḥ'' equipment (because we weren’t having lots of people over), we had to bring out all the boxes in order to stow the stuff again. So I’m not sure we saved effort after all.

The weather for ''shabbat'' is supposed to be somewhat cool and overcast, with a chance of drizzle but (presumably) no incoming… who knows, I might make it to ''shul'' this week!

This ''shabbat'' our menu contains:
store-bought pita,
roast chicken,
various roast vegetables,
various ''salatim'',
and brownies.

Until next time,
''shabbat shalom''!
