New page

{{blog}} {{comment|Apr 3rd}}

So the ''pesaḥ'' holiday is upon us! We had a very small guest list this year, due to the “situation”, but nevertheless it was a good ''seder''. Esther made roast brisket, baked chicken, and various sides. We jointly made our (now) traditional [https://ronware.org/img/soft-matza.jpeg “soft matzah”]. The guests brought wine and desserts, and a good time was had by all. No missiles!

Last week I told my tale of woe regarding the tech who came out to fix our water machine. As it happens: no, he didn’t actually fix it. So I called the company again to get a tech out, but due to ''pesaḥ'', it won’t be for another while. Fortunately it’s not a “big deal”, but I sincerely regret the time I spent convincing that tech to “repair” it.

And our good friend, the antisemitic [https://www.agi.it/estero/news/2023-12-25/natale-pizzaballa-processione-kefyah-celebra-messa-betlemme-24578375/ Cardinal Pierbattista Pizzaballa], the Latin Patriarch of Jerusalem, knowing that because of the war, all major religious sites having no shelters nearby, have been closed to the public — decided to make a stink and create an international uproar. And our ever pusillanimous pols [https://www.jpost.com/christianworld/article-891522 bent over and kissed his ring].

There’s an old Jewish expression: “The antisemite does not accuse the Jew of stealing because he actually thinks he stole something, he just enjoys watching the Jew turn his pockets out to prove his innocence”. This is the esteemed Cardinal PizzaDough. Of course, the current Pope isn’t much better. I’m not going on an anti-Catholic bender here, it’s just that the current leadership of the Catholic Church leaves much to be desired.

To be completely fair (which is something I’m not particularly inclined towards), most leadership, in most places, leave much to be desired.

I’ve spent quite a bit of time this past few weeks working on an English translation of the Mishne Torah, one which uses the correct Hebrew text as a basis, and which correctly translates the meaning of more obscure turns of phrase while keeping close to the original Hebrew structure. I expect that’s what I’ll be spending most of my time on during the “intermediary days of Passover”. It will probably take me a year or two to finish, since it’s not the most straightforward work, but I’ll release bits as they become available. Watch this space!

It rained “considerable much” the past few days, and that’s not something we’re used to here in the Land at this time of year. But we’ll take it in stride; water from the heavens is far preferable to those metal chunks from the heavens! The weather for ''shabbat'' should be cool but not wet.

This ''shabbat'' is ''shabbat pesaḥ'', so we’re planning on:
homemade soft matza,
regular crispy matza,
wine of various types,
lamb and fava stew,
rice,
salmon,
various ''salatim'',
and ice-cream.

Until next time,
''shabbat shalom'' and ''ḥag pesaḥ kasher wesameaḥ''!
