Esther’s been walking in the mornings with her friend; I’m abashed that I’ve done virtually no walking. Now that her friend is outside the country, I’ll try to pick up the slack.

The big news this week, apparently, is that a company rediscovered the fact that [https://www.usatoday.com/story/entertainment/celebrities/2025/07/29/sydney-sweeney-american-eagle-jeans-ad-eugenics/85423261007/ attractive people] are better at getting us to buy merchandise than, well, those who aren’t. This incredibly obvious point [https://www.washingtonpost.com/style/2025/07/28/sydney-sweeney-american-eagle-ad/ is causing meltdowns] amongst the Good People™, and [https://www.sportskeeda.com/us/shows/who-owns-american-eagle-controversy-surrounding-sydney-sweeney-s-new-jeans-ad-explained antisemitism (yes, really)] amongst the Bad People™. They’re often the Same People, you know?

I’m pleased that a quite clever ad campaign is top of the news cycle, rather than our little cauldron of conflicts.

Dumb and dumber:
* France has decided to cement its reputation as the foremost “Surrender Monkey Republic”, by [https://www.cnn.com/2025/07/24/world/macron-france-palestinian-statehood-trump-latam-intl deciding to recognize “Palestine”] shortly. That said, formerly Great Britain, and Canada as well, [https://www.cnn.com/2025/07/30/world/canada-recognize-palestinian-state-september-intl-latam?iid=cnn_buildContentRecirc_end_recirc&recs_exp=up-next-article-end&tenant_id=related.en are vying for the title]. The Netherlands [https://www.jpost.com/diaspora/antisemitism/article-862419 is trying hard], but they haven’t beat the other guys in centuries.
* Israelis who [https://www.israelnationalnews.com/news/412302 spy for the enemy], especially during wartime, must be executed. Why aren’t we doing that?
* A thread on the [https://threadreaderapp.com/thread/1950667687027195998.html?utm_campaign=topunroll “Jews were expelled from 109 countries”] that the antisemites continually state.

I made [https://8th-dev.com/forum/index.php?topic=3045.0 yet another release] of 8th this week. Then I had to fix a bug or two, but such is life. I worked on the lamp project, as mentioned; to do that, I purchased a nice little electric drill/screwdriver thing that [https://www.worx.com/20v-power-share-impact-driver-wx291l.html looks like a pug], but does a surprisingly nice job.

We met my most distant relatives (so far), who live just a few blocks from us, my fourth-cousin (and her descendants) via my mother’s father’s father’s father’s brother! We only found out about them a few weeks ago, so that was pretty cool.

We’ve finally left the heat-wave behind, and are looking forward to pleasant weather over ''shabbat'' (and even for the [https://www.jewfaq.org/tisha_bav fast of 9Av] coming up far too soon).

		+	And it was our 18th "aliyaversary" this week (on the Gregorian calendar; it's in a week on the Hebrew calendar). Eighteen years! Hard to believe, but it's true.
