New page

{{blog}} {{comment|Aug 28th}}

The “vibe coding” genealogy software project has made its first release, and [https://8th-dev.com/familytrees/ you can get it here] or read all about if you like!

I’m trying to think what interesting things Esther and I might have done this week, but I’m coming up blank. In lieu of that, here’s a bunch of links for you to peruse at your leisure.

Ah, I remember what we did, now! We went to [https://osherad.co.il/en/osher-ad/ “Osher Ad”], a store we rarely go because it’s such an unpleasant shopping experience. But Esther was fed-up with the sub-standard trash-bags we normal can get, and had heard that Osher Ad had the Costco “Kirkland” brand bags… so we braved the hordes of unpleasantness and ended up getting many things we did not require. As is fit and just.

Of note:
* Uri: an [https://urikurlianchik.substack.com/p/an-update-from-the-front update from the front], seven reasons people [https://urikurlianchik.substack.com/p/seven-reasons-why-people-are-obsessed are obsessed] with Israel, and [https://urikurlianchik.substack.com/p/sunday-story-fear-and-loathing-in fear and loathing] in October.
* Lisa: on Moshe Feiglin [https://lisaliel.substack.com/p/moshe-feiglin-and-zehut and “Zehut”], and who’s afraid of a [https://lisaliel.substack.com/p/whos-afraid-of-a-technical-bloc “technical bloc”]?
* and… Israel [https://www.jpost.com/history/article-906395 locates the Altalena] in 500m of ocean.
* Preston: Iran [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KV3Rya0xaFQ is feeling pain] and the US launches [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-byze76vjKw “economic D-Day”].
* Sabine on “quantum computing” [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DX_oIQ-tA6M failure now obvious].
* NYC is [https://nypost.com/2026/08/26/business/immigrant-businesses-who-spoke-out-against-mamdani-supermarkets-say-theyre-getting-hit-with-nyc-sanitation-fines/ not OK].
* Food nerds: [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0XGT3tVypyA the lowly onion].
* Nerdy nerds: [https://blog.coredump.cx/p/know-your-paradoxes know your paradoxes]!
* And now for something completely different: my friend asks [https://penamacorrespondent.blog/how-much-does-a-hole-cost/ how much does a hole cost]?

Well, OK, we also did some gardening work. What we actually did was trim the shrubbery that spills out over our fence and into the public domain. The shrub is so prolific (and I hate it sincerely), that it was making it difficult to use the sidewalk (it was beginning to block it). So we sheared the overgrowth and hauled barrels of trimmings away. That’s the most exciting thing I did this week, excluding the programming exercise…

It was too hot this week, and quite humid at the start. However, it is ''supposed'' to cool down over ''shabbat'' and into the start of the next week. We’ll see.

This ''shabbat'' we’re going to have:
homemade ''ḥallah'',
''kebabs'',
baked chicken,
roasted veggies,
''gravlax'',
various ''salatim'',
and ice-cream.

Until next time,
''shabbat shalom''!
