Jan 14th sorry, no devar-torah this week

Hi again!

I usually put together the "devar torah" on Thursday night, and sometimes wait until Friday morning. But this week, I was too tired on Thursday night to think clearly, and I was too busy Friday morning -- so my apologies, but no "devar torah" this week. And now I'm too tired to write much of a blog ... sorry!

Sarah spent her week on trips with the elderly. They toured some of the towns in the southern region of Israel, including {{wiki|Kiryat Gat}} and {{wiki|Beersheba}}. But the highlight of her week was coming home and opening the letter from the Department of Education telling her that (despite everything we thought and were told), she is eligible for her ''bagrut'' certificate. That means she's officially graduated high-school and doesn't have to worry about taking time off to take a phys-ed test.

Daniela's been hosting (well, sort of) her cousin the AFC this week. Showing him the sights and sounds (and smells) of the Big Apple. His first time there, and of course you all know they've been "under the weather", literally.

Esther and I have been keeping busy, as usual. This past ''erev shabbat'' (last Friday), we discovered our sewage drain was blocked -- so I went to the plumber-our-neighbor and borrowed his "sewage rods" (I don't know what else to call them). Unplugged the drain with about an hour to go before candle-lighting, I was happy to have unplugged it, but a bit frazzled.

However, I'm not a plumber; and I apparently didn't unplug it completely, so by Tuesday it was backed-up again. So I arranged once more to borrow my neighbor's tools, but didn't get possession of them until Thursday. That, incidentally, is why I didn't have energy to write the "devar torah". Anyway, this time I ran the large "head" down the pipe, since it was clear to me the roots invading the drain had grown back. I managed to run the rods all the way through to the other clean-out -- over 12 meters (36 feet, approximately) -- and hopefully rid us of the blockage problem for a year.

Our Sages say that ''shalom bayit'' (literally "peace in the home", referring to calm relations between man and wife) is so important, that God allows His name to be erased to ensure it. Knowing that, when Esther mentioned yet again that she wanted to change the arrangement of our ''salon'' -- I knew I had to deal with it ''right now''. That, incidentally, is why I didn't write the "devar torah" today. In any case, much movement of furniture and relocation of books was done. I think I inhaled more dust than is good for me. But ... ''shalom bayit'' is more important than clean lungs. And I apologize to anyone affected by my short temper while performing said rearrangements.

This week we have two of Sarah's friends over. They will hopefully enjoy: roast chicken, baked ''buri'', carrot cake, and a bunch of other yummies.
