New page

{{blog}} {{comment|Jul 3rd}}

I’m sure this will come as no surprise to any of my usual readers, but I will be quite happy to be away from the “World Cup” zone! Two of our Uber drivers had ''continuous'' radio coverage of the games and/or discussions of the games and/or analyses of the games. For the entirety of our rides. One of which was an hour long. So yeah, I’ll not be missing this aspect of Argentine culture!

We’ve had a very nice visit here in the Southern Hemisphere. Or, as is plastered all over the city: “The most beautiful city in the world”. I do take exception to that characterization, because while it does have its various charms, it is difficult to point to any particular “beauty” therein. Lots and lots of eateries, though; and truly fantastic ice-cream, I’ll give Buenos Aires that much. Oh, and the “''subte''” (subway system) is cheap, fast, clean, and goes most places you’ll want to go.

Among other activities, our kids went to the [https://www.temaiken.org.ar/bioparque Temaiken zoological park], where the Grands had a most excellent time. We also went (all of us) to the [https://turismo.buenosaires.gob.ar/en/otros-establecimientos/buenos-aires-eco-park Buenos Aires “Ecoparque”], where the Grands got to see even more animals. I’d have thought there was an upper limit to how many exotic rodents one needs to see, but apparently that is a misconception on my part.

In between, we spent much time with Esther’s family, and a good time has been had by all.

Various and sundry:
* My friend’s [https://penamacorrespondent.blog/davids-adventures-in-botland-part-iiand-beyond/ adventures in botland], part II.
* Uri says they don’t love humanity, [https://urikurlianchik.substack.com/p/they-dont-love-humanity-they-hate they hate it].
* lcamtuf: AI children’s books [https://lcamtuf.substack.com/p/ai-childrens-books-body-horror-edition body-horror edition], and [https://lcamtuf.substack.com/p/all-logic-no-bite all-logic, no bite].
* Medicine nerds: the gonorrhea situation [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5hwKcp2NjyE in Michigan is insane]. Keep it in your pants, people! And very loosely connected, Francis Foster on the [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PmhVQbVOqP8 rise of the “simp” economy].
* History nerds: how long did [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GR07JQy37_k New York City speak Dutch]? Ancient stone at Tel Eton [https://www.jpost.com/archaeology/article-900308 may provide proof] of King Hezekiah’s reforms. And gelatin [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JPIY9WtMh1w the old fashioned way].
* Language nerds: on the long shadow of [https://www.deadlanguagesociety.com/p/the-long-shadow-of-the-celtic-languages-etymology-of-rich the Celtic languages].
* And in “completely misunderstanding things”, the “Secular House” [https://www.jpost.com/diaspora/article-900852 opens in Thailand] to “counter Chabad”. As some of us say, ''nebach''.

This being Esther and my 40th anniversary, we wanted to have a special night-out. We had our sights set on a fancy restaurant, and tried to make reservations, but that business had closed sometime recently. So there we did not go; instead, we went to a burger joint. As it happens, the meal was very good and the place was in a nice part of town. So we did have a good night out after all.

We’re scheduled to begin our return to the Land on Sunday night, late; and scheduled to land in the Land very early Tuesday morning. It’ll be another long flight, and I’ve been assured by the airlines that ''this time'' they’ll have the appropriate kosher meals aboard for us. Being the cynical type, I’m going to make sure we have some decent kosher edibles along in our carry-on bags.

For our last ''shabbat'' in Buenos Aires, we’ll try to have:
<br>
''ḥallah'',
''kippe'',
''laḥmajin'',
roast chicken,
''ḥummus'',
''salatim'',
and ice-cream.
<br><br>

Until next time,<br>
''shabbat shalom''!<br>
