Hi, again!

The holy-day of [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shavuot ''shavuoth''], which commemorates the giving of the Torah, was celebrated this week. Unusually cool and stormy weather was enjoyed by all. The collapse of the United States of America proceeds according to plan. Sarah's film debut!

OK, it wasn't exactly her film debut, but Sarah's school orchestrated a "presentation night". Each of her classmates contributed a short (about 5 minute) film, and the films were played back to back. Some of them were pretty good, most of them were ''disturbing''. Sarah's was the only "documentary" format one (and it was also a bit disturbing, but only if you're as queasy as I am). We look forward to seeing the "final projects", at the beginning of the new school year.

This week, a variety of news editorials were making comparisons between the [http://www.foxnews.com/politics/2013/05/15/scandals-prompt-comparisons-between-nixon-obama-administrations/ Obama and Nixon] administrations. The only thing truly common to them is that they both lied egregiously to the American public. Please compare and contrast:
* Nixon's Watergate scandal did not kill anyone. Obama's [http://www.latimes.com/news/nationworld/nation/atf-fast-furious-sg,0,3828090.storygallery "Fast and Furious"] did, so too did his criminally detached treatment of the Muslim [http://www.weeklystandard.com/blogs/newly-released-benghazi-emails-directly-contradict-white-house-claims_724603.html attacks in Benghazi]. And let's not forget his [http://www.ft.com/cms/s/2/e7c45f68-b894-11e2-869f-00144feabdc0.html infatuation with remote-control-killings].
* Nixon's Watergate burglars only [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Watergate_scandal listened in on the DNC], while Obama's [http://www.washingtonpost.com/politics/justice-department-irs-scandals-challenge-obamas-civil-liberties-credibility/2013/05/14/d1bc56bc-bcc7-11e2-9b09-1638acc3942e_story.html Justice Department and IRS] have been systematically raping the Constitution of the United States of America in order to intimidate political enemies.
* Nixon [http://www.history.com/this-day-in-history/nixon-declares-vietnam-war-is-ending ended US involvement in the Vietnam War] (lest you forget, it started with the Democrat presidents JFK and Johnson). Five years into his tenure, Obama is ''still'' fighting his [http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2013/05/14/obama-afghanistan-plans_n_3271632.html "good war" in Afghanistan].

Don't get me wrong: the late, unlamented Nixon was a paranoid anti-Semite; but at least he wasn't anti-American. He was in fact a much better president than he was given credit for at the time. History will not be so kind towards The One.

I'm progressing towards finalizing the new version of [[zemanim]]; expect it to be released next week or at most the following one. After that I have a couple other projects in the queue, including (I hope) money-making ones (if you might want to invest, [mailto:ron@ronware.org send me an email]). Also, I'm still interested in getting a second-hand Mac (Intel-based) if anyone has one to give/sell me (for cheap). Likewise and iPad (or iPhone, or both) for testing purposes.

We had a quiet, peaceful ''shavuoth'' holiday. We did a mixture of meat and milk: no, not together -- we had a meat meal at night, and dairy meals for lunch and ''se`uda selishith''. For dinner I made a whole roast turkey, which prompted our guests to ask ''where'' can you get a whole turkey in The Land. The laconic answer is: "at the butcher shop". Yes, friends: if you ask your butcher for specific things, he can probably get them for you. You just need to ask! For lunch etc., we had homemade cheese and chard [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cannelloni cannelloni] as well as homemade ice-cream -- both most excellent! Sorry if you couldn't be here.

As I mentioned at the beginning, the weather was cool and even stormy. We got rain here on the outskirts of the desert, and it was cloudy most of the week. The ''forecast'' calls for a heating up over ''shabbat'' and into the next week, but it's looking cloudy and cool as I'm writing this.

This ''shabbat'' it's just the four of us. The usual three plus Sarah's good friend Dinah. We'll serve up a simple meal of:<br>

roasted turkey,
corn on-the-cob,
candied yams,

''cholent'',
spice cake
and various fruits.
