This week’s portion [https://mechon-mamre.org/p/pt/pt0238.htm#21 starts by giving an inventory], tallying all the materials which had been brought by the Children of Israel in order to build the Tabernacle. Everything was brought voluntarily by them; nobody was ''required'' to bring anything.<br />
<br />
This week our government in Israel made the decision to send large amounts of various kinds of aid to Ukraine. We were not ''required'' to do so, our leaders decided to do so on our behalf.<br />
<br />
While it seems a noble and worthy act, there’s a problem. The problem is that when it comes to giving aid, our obligations are clearly laid out. Rambam states regarding this: [https://mechon-mamre.org/i/7207n.htm#13 The poor person who is his close relative comes before everyone else; and the poor of his household before those of his city; and the poor of his city before those of another city…]<br />
<br />
So long as there are many here in the Land who cannot finish the month due to their poverty, who suffer from undernourishment, who don’t have heating in the winter — our obligations to give aid clearly put them first, and the needy of other nations last.<br />
<br />
May we merit to give aid to our people and alleviate their suffering.<br />

השבוע הממשלה שלנו בארץ החליטה לשלוח הרבה סיוע לאוקראינה. לא הוכרחנו לעשות זאת, העליתה שלנו החליטה לפעול כך עבורינו.<br />

כל עוד יש רבים כאן בארץ שלא מצליחים לגמור את החודש בגלל העוני, שסובלים מתת־תזונה, שאין להם חימום בחורף — ההתחייבויות שלנו הן לעזור להם קודם כל, ולעזור לנזקקים במדינות אחרות, אחרונים.<br />

שנזכה לעזור לבני עמנו, ולהקל על סבלם.<br />
