July 20th

A typically busy week, no surprises there. The grand-kids are getting bigger and cuter and starting to smile. Esther was busier than ever at work, since she had to catch up on 1.5 months of work. I was busy with 8th and getting prepared for new work from my clients.

One of my users found some interesting bugs with 8th on Android, so I had fun tracking down the issues. Of course I was ultimately successful — why would you think otherwise? Anyway, here’s a short video of 8th running on an Android watch.

As you probably know, Esther’s an avid knitter, and I was a physics- and math-major back in the day. She felt that we needed to “bond” more, so she sent me this. I love that woman!

What’s up, Seattle?

  • Starbucks’ solution to plastic pollution backfires, as the geniuses overlooked the fact that their replacement plastic was more massive than the original. You had one job to do…
  • Veering ever more Leftward, the city-council enacted a tax on big businesses (which already pay lots of taxes, of course). Amazon is threatening to leave the city.
  • OK, not Seattle: The EU hits Google with a $5 billion fine. Even for Google, that’s a lot of money.

This week, the Israeli parliament (the Knesset) passed a “Jewish nation-state Law”, which has been the cause of a great deal of controversy even though, as a practical matter, it will probably have no impact on anyone. It’s another manifestation of the pusillanimization of the Israeli right. Bibi likes to posture and preen, but in practical terms he’s done little of import since becoming PM. As Finance Minister he was very effective at reducing taxes and improving the economy. Since then? Nada.

The fast-day of “Tishʿa beʼav” is this coming Sunday. The actual 9th of ʼav is on shabbat this year; so the fast is delayed a day. That gives us an extra day for the mashiaḥ to show up and turn the fast into a day of celebration! Will let you know if we still had to fast, next week…

This week it’s just the three of us, feasting upon:
homemade ḥalla, chicken schnitzel, sticky wings, some kind of beef, spicy merluza, bamia in tomato sauce, various salatim, watermelon, and some pastries.

Until next time,
shabbat shalom!
