I mentioned our drip-irrigation two weeks ago as “a constant irritant”. This week I spent more time than I had planned, taking out sections which had sprung leaks and putting in new sections — only to find another leak pop up in some other older section. Yesterday I thought I was mostly done, but this morning another “blowout” occurred.

I hate plumbing, and it hates me!

On the other hand, my long-ferment sourdough-rye bagels came out really excellent. We had them with the obligatory cream-cheese and lox (and wine) in celebration of Esther’s birthday.

The first half of 2020 has been really… exciting, shall we say? The NR has an article just covering this week’s excitement. We lived in Seattle for 20 years. It’s a beautiful place, but I’m really glad we left before it turned into the stankhole it’s becoming. On the other hand, they are supremely climate-pledge-aware.

This week I noticed that “LinkedIn” had swapped their normal logo for a “pride” logo. I mentioned a few weeks ago that “23andMe” had a whole page about BLM. All across the ‘net, companies seem to feel that if they don’t posture and preen and try to demonstrate their Progressive bona fides, they’ll be excoriated and lose business. Maybe it’s true, but I have a feeling that by far the majority of people using LinkedIn (for instance) aren’t going to be truly concerned whether or not the CEO is Socially Aware. And the constant in-your-face posturing is really off-putting to a lot of people (whether or not they otherwise support whatever cause du-jour is being touted).

Just stop it, you “useful idiots”!

Variations on a theme:

  • John Bolton’s book bashing Trump was released. Could be an interesting read, but I reached TSP (the Trump Saturation Point) long ago.
  • Decrying “racism” at every turn, “Liberals” nevertheless seem to have a problem with blackface. Not that it matters, since they have Pure Thoughts™.
  • We don’t know what’s (economically) good for us.
  • Social-media bans are becoming so pervasive that they will probably have a significant effect on future elections and policy-making decisions. Not good.
  • Schneier’s article on identifying a person based on internet ‘bread crumbs’. Interesting stuff.

Sarah’s work environment is inside a hospital, and there was a “coronavirus scare” there during which it was possible she was exposed. So she got to spend a few days in “sort-of-voluntary” quarantine while she was tested for the virus. B”H, she got a “negative” result! Of course, her workplace is still in that environment…

It’s good to have picky users. One of my customers found a number of “issues” in 8th’s big-float handling. So between plugging leaks in the irrigation and working on a client’s project, I fixed a series of somewhat obscure but important bugs. I think I’ll shoot for an interim release next week, rolling-up the issues.

The weather stayed nice this week. It will warm up over shabbat, and I’ve turned off the irrigation just to avoid localized flooding and my further annoyance and distress.

This shabbat the menu includes:
wine! (it always includes wine, but I need it more this week), homemade ḥalla, onion soup, chicken schnitzel, mushroom bourekas, rice pilaf, various salatim, and banana bread.

Until next time,
shabbat shalom!
