I feel like it was a “short week”, since we celebrated Israeli “Memorial Day” and “Independence Day” back-to-back. In honor of the latter, we did manage to barbecue a lamb forequarter and demolish it. But that was about as exciting as it got.

Well, except that Esther’s niece is on an organized trip to Israel, so they’ve been in contact. Our niece will be staying with us over shabbat, which means we need to go to Tel-Aviv this afternoon to pick her up. Because of time constraints, Esther prepared most of shabbat’s meals on Thursday. I very sincerely hope we don’t end up getting stuck somewhere before shabbat

I managed to reestablish contact with one of my relatives, and got dissed by another. As we say, “yom asal, yom basal! As relatives get older, it becomes progressively more difficult to maintain contact. I suppose at some point I’ll be that elderly relative. c’est la vie.

A Few Good Things:

I spent time on the holidays porting and upgrading my zemanim application, and installing it on the Mechon Mamre site. This version knows about (almost) all cities in the world with at least 500 residents — it was the project I wrote about in the aforementioned thread. There are still some enhancements I’d like to make, but I’m pleased overall.

Our weather was pleasant and warm, but it will be cold and possibly rainy over shabbat, only warming gradually into a heat-wave late next week. I’ll take the cold and rain. I foresee an “in—shabbat”…

This shabbat our niece and we will enjoy:
home-made ḥalla, matza-ball soup, zaʿtar roasted chicken, roasted potatoes and yams, roasted green beans, zucchini pashtida, rice, traditional cholent, various salatim, and brownies.

Until next time,
shabbat shalom!
