לֹא-יִהְיֶה כְלִי-גֶבֶר עַל-אִשָּׁה, וְלֹא-יִלְבַּשׁ גֶּבֶר שִׂמְלַת אִשָּׁה: כִּי תוֹעֲבַת ה' אֱלֹהֶיךָ, כָּל-עֹשֵׂה אֵלֶּה  (דברים כב:ה)

התורה מבדילה אותנו מעבודה זרה אפילו במלבוש. שכך הייתה דרך עובדי עבודה זרה -- איש יתחפש לאישה ולהפך, ועשו מעשים מגונים -- הכל לפי דתם. כדי לבלבל בין המינים, כלומר שאין הבדל בין איש לאישה, והכל מותר ביחסים.

לכן התורה גם אסרה יחסים מיניים בין גברים: וְאֶת-זָכָר--לֹא תִשְׁכַּב, מִשְׁכְּבֵי אִשָּׁה: תּוֹעֵבָה, הִוא  (ויקרא יח:כב), וקראה לשני המעשים האלה -- שינוי המלבוש ומשכב זכור -- בשם "תועבה".

בהלכה כתוב: לֹא תַעְדֶּה אִשָּׁה עֲדִי הָאִישׁ, כְּגוֹן שֶׁתָּשִׂים בְּרֹאשָׁהּ מִצְנֶפֶת אוֹ כּוֹבַע, אוֹ שֶׁתִּלְבֹּשׁ שִׁרְיוֹן וְכַיּוֹצֶא בּוֹ, אוֹ שֶׁתְּגַלַּח רֹאשָׁהּ כְּאִישׁ; וְלֹא יַעְדֶּה אִישׁ עֲדִי אִשָּׁה, כְּגוֹן שֶׁיִּלְבֹּשׁ בִּגְדֵי צִבְעוֹנִין וַחֲלִי זָהָב--בִּמְקוֹם שְׁאֵין לוֹבְשִׁין אוֹתָן הַכֵּלִים וְאֵין מְשִׂימִים אוֹתוֹ הַחֲלִי, אֵלָא הַנָּשִׁים: הַכֹּל, כְּמִנְהַג הַמְּדִינָה  (הל' עבודה זרה יב:יא).

יש לנו ציווי להבדיל במלבוש בין איש לאישה -- כמו שיש לנו ציווי להיבדל מן הגויים במלבוש, ובמעשים. זה פירוש המילה "קדוש" -- "מובדל", כדי שאומות העולם יביטו במנהגם ומלבושם ומשאם-ומתנם של היהודים וְאָמְרוּ רַק עַם-חָכָם וְנָבוֹן, הַגּוֹי הַגָּדוֹל הַזֶּה  (דברים ד:ו).
