Tonight starts shabbat and Rosh Hashanah -- a double-feature which happens only twice every seven years!  Since Esther is on the disabled list for the time being, I've been doing the cleaning/cooking/shopping etc, with Sarah's help.  And I don't mind telling you, I don't envy single parents one bit.  Anyway, tonight we are having dinner at a friend's house; tomorrow lunch at another friend's house.  Then we're taking care of the rest.  For the curious, here's what we made (except the ribs, they'll be done Sunday):

Pot roast (in wine and vegetables).  Short ribs.  Leek/mushroom quiche (''pashteda'').  Challah.  Honey cake.  Apple cake.  Candied yams.  Beet salad.  Rebbetzin Farkash's Hungarian Plums, Carrot salad.  Gefilte fish (actually, ''ketsitsot dag'' in spicy tomato sauce).  All this for just one day really, since we are "eating out" shabbat day.

Esther's condition is improving steadily, thank God!  However, she's not permitted to lift more than 1.5 kilos -- so Sarah and I are doing all the lifting. Good exercise, if you can get it, but I would be just as happy to do the exercise without having the reason for it.

Hi again!

Short ribs. Leek/mushroom quiche (pashteda). Challah. Honey cake. Apple cake. Candied yams. Beet salad. Rebbetzin Farkash's Hungarian Plums, Carrot salad. Gefilte fish (actually, ketsitsot dag in spicy tomato sauce).

Last week Madonna performed in Israel. Of course, the Eurabians got their knickers in a twist over that! Then this week, "Hanoi" Jane Fonda and Danny Glover co-sponsored a Toronto protest against having Tel Aviv-based artists highlighted in the Toronto film show. Apparently they don't like the fact that Arab artists have equal freedom of expression in Israel as do Jews. They prefer Jews be silent as the grave. Hmm. To wrap up the anti-Semitic corner this week: in my old home-town swastikas were painted on two Seattle synagogues. Doubtless by "troubled youth" who hadn't undergone "sensitivity training".

In good news, it rained last week. Only for two minutes, but it rained (here on the border of the Judean Desert!). The forecast is calling for rain over the New Year holiday, and for higher than normal precipitation this year. So thank you to everyone who conserved water this year, and thank you again for all you who have prayed for rain! Just ... can you hold off until after sukkot is over? Thanks!

Until next week,
Shabbat shalom, Shana tovah!
