Ye shall not respect persons in judgment; ye shall hear the small and the great alike; ye shall not be afraid of the face of any man; for the judgment is God's (Deut 1:17)
The Children of Israel are about to enter the Land of Israel, and Moshe our Teacher commands them for the last time. In our verse he hands over to them the foundation stone upon which a properly-functioning Torah-based society must be established, the foundation of justice and righteousness.
"Ye shall not respect persons in judgment" is of utmost importance to the proper functioning of the justice system. It is a warning that we not emplace a judge who is not fitting and honest and wise to the High Court. Because such a judge will cause a miscarriage of justice, whether because of his ignorance or because of his malice. Even were he to be someone of impeccable behavior -- if he does not know the depths of the law, he will miscarry justice and cause destruction.
Because of our many sins, we have reached a point where the judges appointed over us by the "Jewish State" are neither fitting nor honest nor wise. Rather, each one displays even more arrogance than his fellow, and destroys the world with his foolishness.
We have no recourse but to turn and request of our Father in Heaven that he fulfill the words of the prophet: And I will restore thy judges as at the first, and thy counsellors as at the beginning; afterward thou shalt be called the city of righteousness, the faithful city (Isa 1:26). May it be soon, amen!
