שֵׁשׁ שָׁנִים תִּזְרַע שָׂדֶךָ, וְשֵׁשׁ שָׁנִים תִּזְמֹר כַּרְמֶךָ; וְאָסַפְתָּ, אֶת-תְּבוּאָתָהּ. וּבַשָּׁנָה הַשְּׁבִיעִת, שַׁבַּת שַׁבָּתוֹן יִהְיֶה לָאָרֶץ--שַׁבָּת, לַה': שָׂדְךָ לֹא תִזְרָע, וְכַרְמְךָ לֹא תִזְמֹר  (ויקרא כה:ג,ד)

עכשיו נמצאים באמצע שנת השמיטה, בה אסור לעבוד את הארץ. ככתוב, השנה היא "שבת" לארץ ישראל, כמו ששבת בראשית היא שבת לעם ישראל. ומצווים אנו שלא למכור את כל היוצא מן הארץ בשנה הזאת, ולנהוג מנהג קדושה בפרותיה וירקות האלה.

אם לא מוכרים את היבול, ולא עובדים את האדמה בשנה הזאת, איך יתפרנסו החקלאים בארץ? הלא ממכירת הפירות והירקות פרנסתם?

ואמנם השאלה הזאת טובה -- והתורה שואלת אותה עבורנו ואף עונה: וְצִוִּיתִי אֶת-בִּרְכָתִי לָכֶם, בַּשָּׁנָה הַשִּׁשִּׁית; וְעָשָׂת, אֶת-הַתְּבוּאָה, לִשְׁלֹשׁ, הַשָּׁנִים  (ויקרא כה:כא). כלומר, אם נשמור את המצווה, הוא ברוך הוא, יברך את עמלנו ואדמתנו, ולא יחסר לנו אוכל. תשבות מלעבוד את הארץ בשנה השביעית, וה' יתברך יכלכל אותך בכבוד.

מזה כמה דורות רבותינו יזמו יוזמה הלכתית חדשה: "היתר מכירה", כדי להקל על החקלאים. ביוזמה הזאת, האדמה נמכרת לגוי משך שנת השמיטה על מנת להפקיע את מצוות השמיטה מעליה. לאחר השנה, האדמה חוזרת לבעלה היהודי, ובינתיים -- כביכול -- יבול האדמה הנו של גוי ולא ישראל, ולכן הופקעה קדושתו.

אבל מכירה זאת אסורה: אין מוכרין להם בתים ושדות, בארץ ישראל… ומפני מה החמירו בשדה: מפני שיש בה שתיים -- מפקיעה מן המעשרות, ונותן להם חניה בקרקע.  (הל' עבודה זרה י:ד). ולא רק זה, אלא המכירה גם לא מועלת להפקיע קדושת הארץ: גוי שקנה קרקע בארץ ישראל -- לא הפקיעה מן המצוות, אלא הרי היא בקדושתה  (הל' תרומות א:יד); אבל בסוריה, כן מפקיעה. (יש לציין כי קדושתה כן מופקעת זמנית, כל עוד הגוי מחזיק בקרקע).

לגבי שבת בראשית כתוב, מי שלא טרח בערב שבת מהיכן יאכל בשבת?  (בבלי עבודה זרה ג) וזה נכון שבעתיים לגבי שבת הארץ, לשנת השמיטה. הכנה לקראת שנת השבת חייבת להתחיל כבר משנה ראשונה של השבוע -- ואז, כשמגיעים לשנת השמיטה אין צורך לסמוך על סולם רעוע כמו היתר מכירה.

Six years thou shalt sow thy field, and six years thou shalt prune thy vineyard, and gather in the produce thereof. But in the seventh year shall be a sabbath of solemn rest for the land, a sabbath unto the LORD; thou shalt neither sow thy field, nor prune thy vineyard.  (Lev 25:3,4)

We are currently in the middle of a shemittah year, in which it is forbidden to work the Land. As it is written, this year is a shabbat for the Land of Israel, just as the shabbat of Creation is shabbat for the Jewish people. And we are commanded not to sell any of the produce of the Land during this year, and to treat its fruits and vegetables with holiness.

If the farmers in the Land don't sell their crops, and don't work the Land this year, how will they earn a living? Isn't it from selling the fruits and vegetables they earn their living?

Indeed, this is a good question -- and the Torah ask it for us and even gives an answer: then I will command My blessing upon you in the sixth year, and it shall bring forth produce for the three years  (Lev 25:21). That is to say, if we guard the mitsvah, He may He be blessed, will bless our labor and our Land, and we will not lack food. Cease working the land on the seventh year, and God may He be blessed, will provide you sustenance with honor.
