Hi again!

I don't have a lot to tell you this week, but I will mention a few things.

Esther and I went out to do some necessary shoppingAs we were going to the store, she looked and commented that it's easy to get caught up in what's wrong here. But just look around, and realize that most of this country has been built in just the past 60 years!  Almost all the infrastructure is new. The majority of the cities are newThe society itself is new!  Expecting it all to work flawlessly is ridiculousThat it exists, and works as well as it does, is really a miracle.

When things don't work so well, it's usually traceable to someone simply not caring enough to do a good jobFor example, the people who put in our plumbing didn't care to set the drain pipes perpendicular to the floor.  So the caps on the drains are not flat with the floor as they should be.  Or the new push-broom I bought; the handle is at the wrong angle to the broom body, so it doesn't push as easily as it shouldSimply ''rashlanut'' (carelessness) and lack of pride in what one does.

The week has been extremely busy for me, as I am trying to coordinate my project as well as write a substantial portion of the softwareGetting technical information from our client is an ongoing form of torture for me, but progress is (very) slowly being madeHopefully I'll be able to move on to another project pretty soon.

In order to make our company more attractive to investors, the CEO decided to reduce our expenditures significantly. Fortunately, he did not choose to fire anyone. However, he did decide to reduce salaries across the boardI would have told him that's not usually a great idea, particularly when we just signed a deal and have others "in the pipeline" -- it's a bit hard to convince the rank-and-file that their sacrifice is necessary.  I really did not appreciate the pay-cut (it's the first time I've ever had my salary reduced), and I hope it does make us attractive to investors so we can undo the pay-cut.

Today we had a rainstorm.  For five minutes, it rained; then it stopped.  We ''really'' need rain - I hope our prayers for it are answered soon!  Especially since we did have a gardener take care of clearing out the overgrowth and getting our garden in order this week.  I would blame "global warming", but after the [http://scienceandpublicpolicy.org/monckton/goreerrors.html embarrassingly long list of scientific errors] in Gore's self-serving "documentary" about it, I think I'll blame insufficiently sincere prayers on my part instead.

Daniela had her first set of mid-term exams, and did very well.  Now she just has to deal with winter in New York...  Sarah is not enjoying the serious "PE" teacher she has, who seems to think the girls need exercise.

Hi again!

Anything I say might sound banal, after this week's events in Mumbai. Ironically, well-meaning people have told me to stay away from India (which as you recall, is where my company has business dealings). Ironic, because not two kilometers away is the occupied enemy territory of El-Azariyah, formerly known as Bethany, formerly beit-hate'ena, "fig place", in Hebrew. Just to complete the ironic circle.

But for true banality we must look to the pen of self-declared experts on the Gaza situation. I've a suggestion for Ms. Goodman: move to Gaza. Maybe you'll be witness first-hand to the plight of the poor Gazans, who have water and electricity courtesy of the "Zionist entity", and whose smuggling tunnels enable them to purchase anything they want. Including Viagra and sheep. I don't suppose I should have mentioned those two in the same sentence.

The week has been extremely busy for me, as I am trying to coordinate my project as well as write a substantial portion of the software. Getting technical information from our client is an ongoing form of torture for me, but progress is (very) slowly being made. Hopefully I'll be able to move on to another project pretty soon.

In addition, it was Thanksgiving in the US -- and being good expats, we did the Thanksgiving thing as we've done for twenty years. It was very nice having my cousins over for a relaxing meal. Hopefully we won't wait so long before our next get-together. Our reporter in Manhattan, Daniela, reported that the "Macy's" parade was "pretty cool".

Today we had a rainstorm. For five minutes, it rained; then it stopped. We really need rain - I hope our prayers for it are answered soon! Especially since we did have a gardener take care of clearing out the overgrowth and getting our garden in order this week. I would blame "global warming", but after the embarrassingly long list of scientific errors in Gore's self-serving "documentary" about it, I think I'll blame insufficiently sincere prayers on my part instead.

Until next week,
Shabbat shalom!
