As promised last week, here's more about Daniela's year.  It was fine.  She learned a lot, had bad food at school, didn't get engaged.  That's about all I got out of her this past week.  If I find out more, I'll let you know.  We did find out she is ''extremely'' attractive to our local mosquitoes.  So far, she's counted fifty-five bites in a few days -- and they've turned into the big-pink-patch kind of bite.  So we got her some 'skeeter repellent, but I'm thinking she's just too attractive to the bugs for the repellent to do much good.  Truth is, the mosquitoes don't bother us too much -- they seem to be able to distinguish between "locals" and "those who aren't yet locals".  Zionist propagandist mosquitoes.

This has been a very good week.  The best thing is that Daniela came back (today!) from New York and will be here for the summerWe'll update you next week about her year, after she's had a chance to decompress a bitThen yesterday, my product finally became "live" -- that is, people can now download and install it.  So that's a weight off me and makes my ''shabbat'' that much more restful. And then today is "Yom Yerushalayim" - the anniversary of the liberation and unification of Jerusalem in 1967. Without the events of Yom Yerushalayim, we wouldn't be able to live where we do.

Speaking of 'attractive': the other day I was shopping for food with Esther, standing in line and minding my own business.  Then I saw it: a woman wearing baggy pants which were apparently a skirt sewn in the middle so that it resembles a pair of pants.  The middle fabric was swaying pendulously between her legsI don't want to be too graphic -- this ''is'' a family blog after all -- but it looked like she had a full diaper-load in her skirt/pants/whatever they wereI'm sure it was intended to look that way, but it was possibly the ugliest fashion I've ever seenI still have nightmares...

We have rented a car for a month, to make it easier to "do things" while Daniela is here.  We'll see how that goes.  It may be we end up leasing a car for a longer period, if we can justify the expenseNow that gas is over 6 sheqels a liter, we need to be more careful about how we spend our funds.

Further 'fashion' foibles:  why do Israeli stores have such unfortunate names?  The lingerie store ''Aphrodite'' (named after a Greek idol); the shoe stores ''Caligula'' (named after an insane Roman emperor who detested Jews) and ''Nimrod'' (named after the Biblical character who, according to the ''midrash'', persecuted Avraham avinu).

In techie news: I am making progress towards a Mac version of my [http://ronware.org/reva Reva Forth] programming languageThis has involved changing the assembler I'm using for the 'core', and which had the benefit of pointing out some bugs I wasn't aware of before. I hope to have the "new version" working within a week or soNot that you care ...

Israel is notorious for [http://www.whatwarzone.com/2009/05/bat-yamno-holonwaitwhere-hell-are-we.html bad signs].  People who failed the ''bagrut'' in English seem to be the only ones writing English signs.  My favorite so far is the one inside Egged buses, which states: "Smoking is prohibited. Breaking this law leads to fin."  -- a nice, ironic multilingual messageBut this week there was an ad in the local paper, from the Mayor's office, directed at the English speaking population:  "We hope to include all english speakers in our invitation malling.please give ypur cantact details to xxxx un the mayorws office" [sic]. "...on the anglo furom committte.after reciving the invitation.  Please let us know if you gope to attend" [sic semper stupidus].  This is the very worst one I've seen so far, but no matter how bad something is, someone can do worse.

We have been buying from our butcher for almost two years -- he's been mentioned in these pages several times.  Last week a [http://www.jerusalemkoshernews.com/ notice was published] in a ''kashrut'' paper, stating that he is not in fact under any ''hashgacha'', which makes it impossible for us to use him.  So we found a different butcher shop (in the Bucharian ''shuq''), which has not only a much better selection, but is cleaner, cheaper and has the ''hechsherim'' clearly displayed on all the products.  ''Caveat emptor'' -- especially regarding butchers!

Hi again!

As promised last week, here's more about Daniela's year. It was fine. She learned a lot, had bad food at school, didn't get engaged. That's about all I got out of her this past week. If I find out more, I'll let you know. We did find out she is extremely attractive to our local mosquitoes.

Speaking of 'attractive': the other day I was shopping for food with Esther, standing in line and minding my own business. Then I saw it: a woman wearing baggy pants which were apparently a skirt sewn in the middle so that it resembles a pair of pants. The middle fabric was swaying pendulously between her legs. I don't want to be too graphic -- this is a family blog after all -- but it looked like she had a full diaper-load in her skirt/pants/whatever they were. I'm sure it was intended to look that way, but it was possibly the ugliest fashion I've ever seen. I still have nightmares...

Further 'fashion' foibles: why do Israeli stores have such unfortunate names? The lingerie store Aphrodite (named after a Greek idol); the shoe stores Caligula (named after an insane Roman emperor who detested Jews) and Nimrod (named after the Biblical character who, according to the midrash, persecuted Avraham avinu).

We are anxiously looking forward to the fabulous shavuot meal Esther has labored over. Spinach cannelloni, various salads, home-made ice cream and cheesecake. Tomorrow I'm going to be the grill-master, as we participate in the Israeli tradition of grilling on yamim-tovim. After seven weeks of performing the simple mitsvah of "counting the `omer", we are ready for a celebratory meal or two. We plan on "shul hopping" tonight, as the tradition is for people to study Torah all night -- and there are a plethora of synagogues around, each (hopefully) giving different shiurim.

My work on a Mac OS/X version of my Reva Forth is making progress, but the Mac OS is ... eh, "unique". The fact that almost no-one writes assembly-language for the Mac is slowing the progress on that. My work on making an English translation of the Mishne Torah is proceeding very slowly, but at least it is proceeding. Maybe the yom-tov will re-energize me?

You can help feed the hungry in Israel!

Until next week,
Shabbat shalom!
