June 5th (See this week's devar torah) Comments or questions? Click here!

Apologies to my Israeli readers: I’m in the US visiting my family, and it’s just Friday morning for me — so the blog is coming out just before shabbat your time. Next week we’ll be back to the usual schedule.

As mentioned, I’m in the US (Seattle area) visiting my mom and brother. For those of you who want to call me, my US number is 425-296-0766 (which I’ll be keeping even after I return home to the Land). The plan is for me to stay here until Wednesday, returning to the Land on Thursday.

The flight here was 16 hours with a 2 hour layover in Frankfurt. Calm flights, though I’m very glad I took the precaution of packing something to eat. Unfortunately, the folks sitting next to me on both flights were talkative; fortunately, they were interesting. Ah, flying!

This week has passed in a blur; I’ve been so active visiting with my family and extended family and friends, that I can scarcely remember what I’ve done. Seattle is the same as I remember it: cold and moist (except that the weather has heated up now and will actually be warmer than Jerusalem for the next several days).

My mom has more or less given me her car to use, since I had a few things to take care of while here; and once the car was adjusted for me, she just said, “it’s set for you, you drive”. The traffic around here is pretty bad, and so it’s advantageous to take the “diamond lane” on the freeway (high-occupancy lane). But getting over to it when you get on the crowded-packed freeway is not so easy. Mom was astonished at the ease with which I got over to the diamond-lane; to which I responded, “I’m an Israeli driver, Mom”. QED.

In a surprise move, my nephew got a ticket and flew up from San Diego; he’s here now, and will be until after I leave. Family time.

This shabbat he and I will be staying with friends of ours (Dinah’s family) from the community we used to live in. They’re only a short walk from the synagogue we used to attend, so it’s convenient and I’ll get to “catch up” with a lot of old friends.

Since I’m away, Esther’s been living it up — parties every night, concerts and fine dining. In the meantime, I’m in the dark eating mush. She has to come with me if I go somewhere again! Anyway, she’s been invited out for shabbat meals, but Sarah’s friends are coming over so they’ll be enjoying an almost idyllic shabbat.

Esther’s eating out most meals, but Sarah and her friends will be having:
meatballs and rice, vegetable soup, zucchini quiche, chicken and potatoes, cabbage salad, roasted cauliflower, steamed green beans, corn empanadas, and chocolate chip cookies.

Until next time,
shabbat shalom!
