Rats! No, literally: I mean “rats”. We’ve been carrying on a low-intensity fight against the “scratching noises” from under our stairs for some time. Alas, it wasn’t Harry Potter attempting an escape, but rodents of, unusually, unknown size.
So one day this week I got tired of trying to patch holes I can’t reach, and we got “humane mouse traps” (not exactly the kind we got, but similar). They were the only ones on offer at the place we went to, and I naïvely thought they would work. They did not, not even a little bit. The rat bastards (pun intended) knocked into the traps and triggered them, and no rodents were trapped.
The next day, we went to the local hardware store and came back with a selection: “sticky traps”, “cage traps”, and rat-poison. The guy behind the counter said, “you’re really serious”. Damn right I am! Within literally 15 minutes of setting the cage traps, one of them sprung and… holy crap, a big rat was in it! We’ve reset the traps, and hope it’s not an infestation.
I was hoping for cute little mousies, but we got Bad Bart. I opened his cage over the “lookout precipice” near our place, on the assumption that down far away from us was much better than anywhere near us. The rat landed safely as far as I could tell, not that I truly care.
Various and sundry:
- My friend’s blog opining on signs of intelligent life, among other things. As an aside: the planet proposed as a potentially livable one for humans is a mere 124 light-years away. Right around the corner, really; but our fastest current space vehicles would take on the order of 190,000 years to reach it. I don’t expect to live quite that long.
- Douglas Murray’s excellent interview on Michael Malice’s podcast.
- My messages on “X” to Javier Milei seem to have had some success! ¡Que bueno!
- Microsoft really wants your data.
- Very unpleasant but necessary: How Israel failed on Oct 7th. There’s more than enough blame to go around.
- Uri pleads with Israelis to stop being idiots. Part I and Part II.
- An informative thread: is “aspartame” (the artificial sweetener) bad for you?
Other things: I restarted “starters” for sourdough. This time I’m doing one each of wheat and rye. Both are coming along nicely, thank you for asking!
We did post-pesaḥ shopping to restore our larder, and turns out just about everything we got wasn’t the right sort (e.g. not what we normally get). The rice turned out to be “minute rice”. The mayonnaise is some goopy monstrosity… moral of the story: wait another week before trying to get stuff, after the holiday here in the Land!
It was a week of hot-and-dry weather, but fortunately the heat-wave broke and now it’s pleasant. Presumably it will stay seasonably pleasant through Monday. Nice!
This shabbat it’s just us for a change. We’ll work on:
homemade ḥalla,
turkey teriyaki,
rice,
roasted veg,
various salatim,
and brownies.
Until next time,
shabbat shalom!
