No mention is made of the Zohar in either Talmud, any of the Sifra, Sifri, Tanchuma or any other early work.  Neither is it mentioned by any of the Geonim, nor by the Rambam in any of his works.  One expects that such a significant work by a Tanna would have been at least mentioned in passing by one of the early sources, and yet we don't find reference to the Zohar until its "revelation" by [[wikipedia:Moses de Leon|Moses de Leon]] in the 13th century CE.

Lack of historical references

No mention is made of the Zohar in either Talmud, any of the Sifra, Sifri, Tanchuma or any other early work. Neither is it mentioned by any of the Geonim, nor by the Rambam in any of his works. One expects that such a significant work by a Tanna would have been at least mentioned in passing by one of the early sources, and yet we don't find reference to the Zohar until its "revelation" by Moses de Leon in the 13th century CE.
