וּבַיּוֹם, הַשְּׁמִינִי, יִמּוֹל, בְּשַׂר עָרְלָתוֹ  (ויקרא יב:ב)

מצוות מילה היא הקדומה ביותר המיוחדת לעמנו, שנאמר לאברהם אבינו: וְעָרֵל זָכָר, אֲשֶׁר לֹא-יִמּוֹל אֶת-בְּשַׂר עָרְלָתוֹ -- וְנִכְרְתָה הַנֶּפֶשׁ הַהִוא, מֵעַמֶּיהָ  (בראשית יז:יד). כל זרע אברהם במשמע, ועם ישראל בפרט.

כל זכר הבא להתגייר חייב לעבור מילה כחלק מתהליך הגיור. אסור למי שאינו מהול (המכונה "ערל") לאכול מן ה"פסח". משה רבינו ע"ה כמעט נהרג על עסקת המילה, שנאמר: וַיְהִי בַדֶּרֶךְ, בַּמָּלוֹן; וַיִּפְגְּשֵׁהוּ ה', וַיְבַקֵּשׁ הֲמִיתוֹ  (שמות ד:כד). מדוע המילה נחשבת כל כך חשובה?

נראה לי שיש תשובה בהלכה: מְאוּסָה הִיא הָעָרְלָה שֶׁנִּתְגַּנּוּ בָּהּ הָרְשָׁעִים, שֶׁנֶּאֱמָר "כִּי כָל-הַגּוֹיִם עֲרֵלִים"  (ירמיהו ט,כה) . וּגְדוֹלָה הִיא מִילָה, שֶׁלֹּא נִקְרָא אַבְרָהָם אָבִינוּ שָׁלֵם, עַד שֶׁמָּל, שֶׁנֶּאֱמָר "הִתְהַלֵּךְ לְפָנַי, וֶהְיֵה תָמִים. וְאֶתְּנָה בְרִיתִי, בֵּינִי וּבֵינֶךָ"  (בראשית יז,א-ב). מכאן שהסרת הערלה אינה מעשה סמלי בלבד, אלא שהיא מזכירה את הנימול שיסיר מלבבו כל דבר החוצץ בינו לבין הקדוש ברוך הוא, כמו שממשיך הפסוק: …וְכָל-בֵּית יִשְׂרָאֵל עַרְלֵי-לֵב  (ירמיהו ט,כה). יהי רצון שנסיר מעלנו כל מיני ערלה, ועל ידי זה נתקרב ביותר לבוראנו.

And in the eighth day the flesh of his foreskin shall be circumcised  (Lev 12:2)

The commandment of circumcision is the most ancient one specific to our people, as Abraham our forefather was told: And the uncircumcised male who is not circumcised in the flesh of his foreskin, that soul shall be cut off from his people  (Gen 17:14). All of Abraham's descendants are included, but the Jewish people in particular.

Any male who wishes to convert to Judaism must undergo circumcision as part of the process of conversion. It is forbidden for one who is uncircumcised to eat of the Passover sacrifice. Moses our teacher, of blessed memory, was almost killed because of circumcision, as the verse says: And it came to pass on the way at the lodging-place, that the LORD met him, and sought to kill him  (Gen 4:24). Why is circumcision considered so important?
