We’ve been busy; no surprise there. The “High Holidays” are fast approaching, and we’re struggling to get in the proper mindset, let alone prepare physically. I started getting the back patio area ready, but next week will see much more activity there.
I’ve been working on clearing out old, em, “stuff” from my office. To that end, I engaged in serious “de-soldering” of various circuit boards I had sitting around (which I had saved, as you might have guessed, in order to salvage components from them). I’m happy to say the inexpensive “heat gun” I got did the trick very well: it was a good purchase! Now I need to test the components to see whether or not they’re usable…
Our next-door neighbor decided that since it’s hot outside here on the edge of the Judean Desert, he would install an A/C unit in his front yard. The yard which faces the prevailing winds, and which is completely exposed to the elements. You might have thought he’d get a portable A/C unit intended for outdoor use; but no, he put the indoor portion of a standard split A/C unit on the wall between our yards. He then “weatherproofed” it with the thin nylon sheeting usually used as temporary tablecloths. I’m not sure if he considered the fact that the prevailing winds will disperse his expensively refrigerated air, and that the thermostat will never turn off.
Y’all know I’m an avid DYI freak, but I do at least try to make my projects make a modicum of sense…

Nerdism: I built an “ATtiny85 programmer” with an Arduino I had on-hand. More precisely, I followed some instructions online, and then wired up a more permanent board. Why? Because the ATtiny85 is a relatively cheap microcontroller which is perfect for lots of small projects (including an upcoming one I hope to start next week).
Remembrances of Nerdism Past: The Olivetti Programma 101. I actually used a slightly more modern version of this back in high-school!
The weather was excellent, aside from the occasional Houthi missiles. It’ll presumably stay nice for shabbat as well.
We’ve guests this shabbat, who will partake of:
