November 4th

Good timing: the first significant rain fell this week, the same week we read the Torah portion about Noaḥ. True, as promised we didn’t have a world-destroying flood (though I didn’t see any rainbows), nor did we get a huge amount of rain; still, it was enough to feel good about. No further rain is in the forecast for the upcoming week, unfortunately.

I’ve mentioned before that we’ve signed contracts with two Israeli clients. I’ll call them “Client 1” and “Client 2”. Last month, I worked a goodly amount for Client 1, and he seems to be happy with my work. Likewise, I’m happy with the (unexpected) promptness of his payment: so it looks like the Client 1 contract is a keeper. B”H!

This week I spent a couple days at Client 2’s place, trying to become informed about the ins and outs of what they’re doing and what I’ll be doing. I’m taking over from another contractor; unlike me, however, he is quite disorganized and not especially helpful. So my task is very difficult, and I’m not sure how well this contract is going to work out. I’ll be returning to their place for two more days this coming week. I plan on having a heart-to-heart with Client 2: he needs to know what the options are, and I’m not sure he’ll like them.

I think I speak for almost everyone I know when I say we’ll all be greatly relieved once the USA’n elections are over and done. Not because we look forward to the results thereof, which will be bad no matter what — but because we’re sick to death of all the virulently partisan propaganda and bullying which has been clogging the news-feeds and social-media channels for the past six months or so. We say: let Hillary go to jail already, and let Trump go back to Manhattan — “A plague a' both your houses!” Of course, whichever one loses will complain about it ad-naseum, so the pain and suffering will not end with the election, probably.

Stuff:

Sarah’s first week of work was spent in training, and entirely standing. They don’t have chairs for the staff. Anyway, after the initial shock of being in a full-time workplace, she’s getting used to the idea. Now we have to support her by buying books…

We’re contemplating erecting some kind of partition or wall between us and our immediate neighbors. Their smoking habits adversely affect our quality-of-life. Not to mention that there are things we don’t need to be able to see, nor do we want them to be able to peer into our house either. It’ll have to be something that can stand the strong winds, though; nothing too flimsy. Suggestions welcome!

The weather has been cool and fall-like; it will be a bit cooler on shabbat. The forecast calls for a slight warming and then a mini heat-wave towards the end of next week. Hopefully, they’re wrong about that last…

This shabbat the three of us as well as Dinah will be peacefully enjoying:
homemade ḥalla, braised short-ribs, vegetable soup, eggplant “Parmesan”, chili and rice, Date-Pecan cake, salatim, and fruit.

Until next time,
shabbat shalom!
