Hi, again!

Less than a week to go before rosh hashanah, and we're not ready for it. At least I don't feel ready. Sure, we have most of the supplies we need (food, paper goods, etc.), though we need more wine; but I feel like I'm entering the period of teshuva completely unprepared spiritually. It's a bit alarming.

For me, anyway, that's mostly to do with having been so busy with work that I'm exhausted by the end of the day. I know, that's an excuse -- but it's my excuse, and I'm sticking with it. This coming week at work will be even more stressful than the previous few months, since we have to finish what we're doing before the holidays. So I, for one, am really looking forward to the "time off" aspect of the holidays, and will strive heartily to avoid even thinking once about work while I'm not at work. That won't really be too hard for me...

Daniela for her part has also been extremely busy, studying for the GRE, which she will be taking/will have taken today. Time-zones, you know? Well anyway, by next week she'll have taken the test and hopefully will have more time available. We wish her success (not that she needs our wishes), and look forward to hearing good things. Sarah has also been busy dealing with "the public". As has Esther, with accounts. I guess the whole family's been busy this week.

The Arabs have also been busy this week! Their obsession with going to the UN to gain "recognition" of their "state" seems to have been premature, as were their celebrations of independence. But reality was never a barrier to the Arab mind. Fortunately, B"H, despite Egypt's bizarre antipathy towards Israel, there will not be a lulav shortage this year. I'm really looking forward to have a "blue and white" lulav (and I wonder: why don't we always?)

Esther and I have been frequenting the "gym" near us a couple times a week, and walking more. Pretty soon we'll both need a new wardrobe (though as y'all know, I'm happy to wear baggy clothes). The extra exercise is having the unexpected benefit of making my left hip less painful -- I've been in pretty much chronic pain there for quite a while. Don't know if it's due to weight loss or strengthening of the muscles around the joint or what -- but it's a welcome thing.

We also had our second "Hebrew ḥug" this week. This time around, we started off with a "demonstration" of going to the bank. So our friends were able to pick up a lot of very useful words and hear how they are used in practice. Next time we might "visit the doctor", or "go shopping"... we'll see. Any suggestions?

Up and about:

This shabbat will be a quiet one, no guests. Our simple menu will consist of: baked chicken with potatoes, tuna salad, soup, salatim, salchichas, zucchini quiche, cookies

Until next week,
shabbat shalom, and shana tova umetuqa!
