¡Feliz Cinco de Mayo! Now that that’s out of the way, on to this week’s events…
This week we celebrated Israel’s 69th birthday. Happy birthday, Israel! Last week I told you about the demographic statistics. This week, a survey was released in which it turns out that Israeli Arabs actually have a more favorable view of Israel than do Israeli Jews. I suppose it’s because they look at all the neighboring Arab countries and think, “Damn! It’s pretty good here!”. So despite the problems, Israelis — Jewish and otherwise — are pretty satisfied. I know we are.
Esther’s work is becoming more hectic, because one of her co-workers — the only other one who works on US taxes — just left on maternity leave. So Esther’s boss wants her to work more. On the one hand, it means more income; on the other hand, it means Ron will be sad and lonely. Alas, money wins out.
Sarah’s spending shabbat with her friend RivQua, in Raʿanana. Fortunately for her, it’s not summer yet and the weather is supposed to be pleasant. We’ll miss her (for the second time in two weeks…).
I made a major release of 8th this week, which seems to have received more attention than a lot of our prior releases. Over a hundred downloads in a few days. And yet, so far, I haven’t received any bug reports on it. Gooooal! This release added a lot of cryptographic functionality, but it also fixed a number of issues and added some features. Feel free to check it out!
Things of note:
- Clinton’s night of the living dead
- “Humor”: Not the White House Correspondent’s Dinner
- Why organic-farming is not sustainable farming
- Beware of a fake Google phishing attack
When people learn Hebrew with me, I always explain to them that the current Israeli pronunciation of Hebrew is incorrect, being strongly influenced by the languages of the major societies in which we spent years of Exile. For your edification, I present an explanation and elucidation by someone other than me, so you know I’m not making it up. Part 1: ʼalef through yod, Part 2: kaf through ṣadi, and Part 3: qof through taw. The subject is quite interesting, though R’ Bar-Ḥayyim’s delivery is rather flat, and I do wish he would find someone else to do the introductions — that guy’s got an irritating delivery.
The weather is pleasant with below-average temperatures. The run of pleasant weather is supposed to last until around Tuesday, so enjoy!
This shabbat we are once again down to the not-so-dynamic duo. We were invited out for dinner; for the rest, we’ll have:
home-made ḥalla,
slow-cooked roast-beef with potatoes, carrots, and yams,
various salatim,
and ice-cream.
Until next time,
shabbat shalom!
