This week was a very (!) busy one for me. I made a major release of 8th, which includes a lot of new functionality. And best of all? Nobody’s reported any bugs! I also received a request for a “native Apple M1” version of 8th; but since I don’t have that hardware, I’ve posted a small campaign whereby people who are interested can help fund that development (and receive benefits in return). We’ll see how much interest there is.
I’ve also been trying to find an alternative to using “PayPal” for payment processing in Israel. Not only because once their fees and terrible exchange rates have been extracted, I end up paying around 8% for each transaction, but also because they’ve decided to be censorious. If you don’t think it’s a real danger for payment processors to also presume to be moral arbiters, you’ve not been paying much attention.
Weird, unusual, or just plain sad?
- Worried about COVID-19? Hold my beer: there’s now an untreatable “superbug fungus” spreading in some US hospitals.
- A former White House doctor predicts Biden will resign. Though I abhor the notion of “President Harris”, it really is unnerving and sad to see the obvious cognitive decline of the US President; he deserves to be treated better.
- Mike Solana opines on the billionaire-space-race and the uselessness of NASA.
- The baseball team formerly known as the “Cleveland Indians” changed their name, because. They presumably didn’t know their own history.
- Have I mentioned how much I hate Windows? A nasty printer-driver vulnerability has been lurking in systems for 16 years, but now there’s a “patch” for it.
- Hungry? How about a plate of some $200 french fries? The gold-leaf is calorie-free.
Sarah and Yarin completed their move to new accommodations, basically just around the corner from where they were before. Much nicer place (as far as we could tell, remotely). We look forward to visiting sometime soon.
And this week I — for the first time, ever — lost a “wallet”. I had gone to the mall to get a replacement phone for Mom, and put her ID and credit card in my pocket. At some point, they slipped out of my pocket at the mall. When I went to use her card, I found it missing; and needless to say, I was “concerned”. I looked everywhere, went to the mall management, waited for a gov’t office to reopen; no luck. Finally, I returned home, in a tizzy.
Shortly afterwards, we heard someone calling out Mom’s name. I went outside, and two women were looking for Mom, to return her ID and cards. They went out of their way to track down the card owner; don’t tell me there aren’t really good people here!
The heat was below-average most of the week, but we’re climbing back up to standard ME temperatures. Oh, well, it is almost August!
Our menu this shabbat has, among other things:
homemade ḥalla,
turkey roast,
zucchini pashtida,
green bean salad,
grilled steak salad,
various salatim,
and peach kuchen.
Until next time,
shabbat shalom!
