It wasn’t a good week for due process and political stability.
The unprecedented raid on former President Trump has many of us worried. The various legal and political implications are quite serious. Whether or not you’re a fan of Trump, you should be concerned by what certainly appears to be a politically-motivated abuse of governmental power. We’re all waiting with bated breath to see what damning evidence the FBI uncovered.
I finally took the $$$ plunge, and signed up with MyHeritage in order to further our genealogical endeavors. They’ve got a surprisingly large amount of information relevant to Esther’s family as well as mine, so I’ll be using it to scoop up as much information as I can over the next year.
I also maintain a private family-tree on my own server, and was hopeful I could upload (portions of) my private tree to MyHeritage, get more information, download the data from there, and merge into my private tree. Alas, the GEDCOM data format which is the universal genealogical exchange format, is a truly crappy format for this purpose. It almost guarantees that “round-tripping” data between dissimilar systems will not work.
Various and sundry:
- “Did not see that coming!”: man dies after contracting brain-eating amoeba in northern Israel.
- An excellent Triggernometry interview: “Technocracy Can't Answer Moral Questions”.
- The “inflation act” Congress just passed won’t work. Obviously, but apparently less so to the congresscritters.
- Bill Maher on “fat acceptance”.
- Mallen on the Trump raid and other things.
- Tech bonus round: how to secure your Linux server with SELinux.
There are still some things we should do to get the house into better shape, but I find it difficult to get motivated. There’s some painting we’ve got to do, and the kitchen should be reworked a bit. As I said, difficult to get motivated…
Our weather was pleasantly not-boiling-hot this week, despite being August. It looks to stay pleasant-ish through shabbat and into most of next week. Bonus!
We’ll fire up a beefy shabbat, with:
ḥalla,
“London broil”,
baked potatoes,
braised short-ribs,
roasted veggies,
homemade ḥummus,
various salatim,
and peaches-and-cream.
Until next time,
shabbat shalom!
