Our social life exploded this week!
First, we paid a visit to Sarah and Yarin. We had a nice dinner, a pleasant visit, and an evening away from home. Then, we celebrated our 16th “aliyahversary” with the friends with whom we made aliyah, as is our custom. This time, we attended the Jerusalem Wine Festival — our first time in a long time. Finally, we spent an evening out with my cousins at a nice restaurant in a scenic area. Catching up on family events, and – surprisingly – no politics!
Besides that unusual flurry of social activity, I finished the “sukka” rebuild. Instead of a standalone structure we labor to build and tear down each year, I repurposed the old beams so they can be (removed and) attached to our house, leaning on our storage area. No need for “walls”, much more head-room, and five minutes to erect (or take down).
I also “finished” the front gate. That involved a lot of welding, sanding, and finally painting. It almost looks good if you don’t look too closely.
Various:
- Apple’s shipped attestation on the web. It’s not going to end well.
- Microsoft: the truth is even worse than you think. Well, not worse than I’ve been telling you, but still.
- Electric cars, generally, still cost more to refill than do the gasoline variety.
- US citizens will need a visa to visit the EU starting next year.
- Pluralistic on data-driven dictatorships.
- And Colin Wright opines that Neil deGrasse Tyson should stick to physics. I think he should retire to a desert island.
I made another release of 8th this week, mainly enhancements and fixes around Android support. It was a surprising amount of work to get “swipe” gestures properly supported.
Esther’s trying to rearrange storage in our kitchen, and we made a side-trip to IKEA before visiting with my cousins, thinking we might find something there. Unfortunately, traffic was so bad, we only had a half hour or so there — which, you might imagine, isn’t nearly enough time to check out the options. Also, we’d forgotten to measure things first… so we got napkins and other tchotchkes.
The unfortunately long heat-wave broke, and we’ve returned to seasonal norms, B”H! This week we’ll continue with average-for-summer-in-the-ME temperatures, which is fine by me!
Our menu this shabbat contains:
ḥalla,
chicken piccata,
rice,
baked fish,
zucchini pashtida,
mushroom pashtida,
various salatim,
and ḥawayaj-ginger cookies.
Until next time,
shabbat shalom!
