Where to start, where to start? Well, the olive harvest I mentioned last week? About 90% of the olives were infested with olive fly larvae, so we ended up with many fewer olives than we had expected. Next year: better living through chemistry!

Then: the weather has been cooling, as one expects in Autumn. So I figured it was time to turn on the A/C to heat up the house; but when I did, the A/C unit just blinked balefully at me. Six winks, pause; six winks, pause… was it a code? Yes, yes it was! Unfortunately, nobody knows exactly what it means, including the purported A/C repairman. The unit is 13+ years old so no replacement parts are available, nor are any manuals, but we figured perhaps it could be repaired using duct-tape or some other MacGyvering. So we called in the “repairman”.

Now, I don’t mean to be harsh. Oh, who am I trying to kid? I just want to know why “repairmen” expect the home-owner to provide ladders, screwdrivers, rags, soldering irons (!), and other various and sundry bits which should be in the person’s bloody vehicle. This isn’t the first time we’ve experienced this; and to keep my blood-pressure in check, I’ll just stop here. Well, no: the A/C did not get repaired, and we’ll have to get a new one. An expense we were not really prepared for, I must say.

Other stuff:

So yeah, a cease-fire agreement was reached under enormous outside pressure, including threats of the US letting the UN have its way with us, as well as continuing the ongoing US weapons “slowdown”. So our gov’t agreed to cease fire for 60 days. But it seems that Hezb’allah hasn’t quite understood the terms, since they’ve already breached the agreement several times. But hey! It’s the thought that counts, so I’m told.

We’ve had cold enough weather to use the A/C to heat the house; but of course, we can’t do that, can we?!? At least it’s warming a bit for shabbat, and we’ll have hot tea and sweaters.

This shabbat we’re out for a meal. For the others, we’ll have: red lentil soup, turkey shawarma, various salatim, and apple pie.

Until next time,
shabbat shalom!
