May 23rd – sorry, no devar torah this week
Hi, again!
The week started with a bang — the bang of exploding water pipes! OK, in fact we didn’t hear the pipes explode, because they weren’t in our house... but we did wake up on Sunday to a startling lack of water in the house. I had thought that perhaps some kids had played a prank, and shut off our water valve, but no — the supply line to our street got ruptured over shabbat, and so we had no water for most of the day on Sunday.
We had another very busy week. Among other things, we went to our neighbor's daughter’s wedding. That event was held in a really nice outdoor location at “HaMe`ara” at Kibbutz Beit Guvrin. The weather was fantastic, the event was very well attended, and the officiating Rabbi didn’t drag out the proceedings. We met up with some of our neighbors there, which was also kind of nice. We got back around midnight, and had a hard time the next morning at our weekly business meeting. Fortunately, our consultant is understanding…
Sarah was very busy as well, and among other things attended one of her friends’ sister’s wedding near Modi`in. She got back very late and had a very long day.
I spent the week changing my application’s GUI to use Qt. It was an educational and frustrating bit of work, but I can see the light at the end of the tunnel now. It will significantly advance our efforts to finish the beta version of our application by the end of July.
Just yesterday, we heard a voice over a loudspeaker saying “everyone, clear your vehicles off this street”. The street leading to ours, that is. What was happening was they were repaving the street, so they wanted it cleared of cars. But since they hadn’t sent out any notices to the effect that this was going to happen, nobody knew what was going on. Then they blocked off the street, so we couldn’t get back to our own street. In the end, the street did get repaved; and it looks like an acceptable job at that, surprisingly enough.
We’ve all been operating in sleep-deprivation mode this week, and I can’t think of anything very interesting to tell you right now. So I’ll sign off and look forward (!) to shabbat. This week Dinah will be staying with us, as well as an anonymous guest whom we don’t know (and won’t be eating with us). We’ll provide laughter as well as:
miso soup,
stir-fried vegetables,
rice,
pepper-beef,
crock-pot chicken,
tarta de acelga,
and brownies.
Until next week,
shabbat shalom!
