It was a quiet week for us, being the “intermediate days” of the pesaḥ holiday. We went on some short excursions. We ate more than usual. We just enjoyed the freedom.

Before all that, there’s some news about our fundraising campaign. One of 8th’s users is an electronics engineer, and he’s designing and developing a board which is customized to run an embedded version of 8th. He and I have agreed on the design parameters, and it’s going to be a very powerful board. To top it off, he is donating his design time! Come join us and make the “embedded 8th board” a success.

Back to our regularly scheduled program…

Sunday, Esther and I did a circuit of a number of wineries local to the Beit Shemesh area (on the other side of Jerusalem from us, down in the Elah valley and surrounding areas). Among the wineries we visited was one we’d never heard of: “Agur”. We’d never heard of them, because they don’t sell in stores! A very nice find, and off the beaten path in Elah valley.

Monday, we waited for the air-conditioning technician to show up. Alas! They called to say the part they needed hadn’t come in, and they would reschedule. I called them, to find that they had rescheduled a visit for the 12th of May (!), which turns out to be Israel Independence Day — a national holiday when nobody works (!!). I was not happy. After complaining and sending emails and talking with someone eventually, they rescheduled for next week. Good thing we had extra wine on hand from our previous day’s trip!

Tuesday, we went to downtown Jerusalem to see the “3D Street-Art Exhibition”. Those are paintings on the pavement, which are designed so that you need to look at them from a particular location to get the proper effect. When you do, they look three-dimensional. Very cool. We also went to visit our friend, who is the chef at the “Coney Island Knish” restaurant on Yaffo street, and had kosher-for-passover pizzas for lunch. That was also very cool!

Wednesday, we went to Tel Aviv, to ferry our tired daughter there. We also intended to eat at a particular restaurant, but the traffic was so incredibly bad, and there was absolutely no parking, we skipped that part. It still ate up a lot of time. We then went to the “Museum of the Diaspora”, which was underwhelming to say the least. It hasn’t changed in the past 30+ years. The lighting is terrible, so you can’t see the exhibits very well. Say what you want about the Israel Museum in Jerusalem, but at least you can see the exhibits (and it’s being updated all the time).

Thursday, I wrote this blog. Esther’s busy preparing the food for the next two days. I’ll be cleaning the house, helping her with food prep and getting supplies if we need them. We’ll probably be busy all day.

The weather these past two days has been really pleasant. Cool, with nice breezes. But that will end and after shabbat it will get hot again on Sunday. Not to worry, the A/C will be repaired some day (not Sunday, though).

So once again, I’ll sign-off early, since we’ve got plenty of preparations yet to do today. Wishing everyone a happy and kosher pesaḥ, and a peaceful shabbat!

Still have a relative crowd this time (and for two days). Chaim and Ariele as well as RivQua will be joining us for the last pesaḥ meals and for shabbat. We’ll have::
pesaḥ 7 night: potato-leek soup, mina de carne, mina de espinaca, roasted veggies, carrot kugel, brownies, pesaḥ 7 day: green salad, cabbage salad, ḥummus, baked trout, eggplant casserole, roasted potatoes, coconut macaroons and banana cake, shabbat night: potato-leek soup, green salad, cabbage salad, grilled chicken, kebabs, chard with chickpeas, rice, (repeat of the desserts), shabbat day: roast beef, leftovers, ice cream, and fruit compote.

Until next time,
shabbat shalom and ḥag pesaḥ kasher!
