We had a pretty busy week. I went for my “pre-op” meeting at the hospital, where the doctor checked my blood pressure and lab results, and informed me about the risks of general anesthesia. But I’m not sure how much faith I have in a doctor who’s got a pack of Marlboro's in his shirt-pocket. I mean, it’s not the 1970s anymore, is it? I sure hope not!
I also underwent another physiotherapy session, after which my leg did not feel like it was in its happy place. Nevertheless, I continue with the PT in the hopes it will make post-op recovery faster. Then later in the week, we had gone out for dinner; when we returned, the entrance gate had been pushed by the wind and was locked tight because it was pushed beyond the gate-post. So I had to climb over the gate and go in the house, and get tools to unhinge the gate. With my screwed-up knee, that was a lot of fun — I’m still paying for that dinner.
Sarah interviewed with her former employer for a position as a store manager. They really want her to start soon, so: congratulations Sarah, and we expect a steep discount on any books we get!
Esther has been working hard trying to get tax returns done for “special clients”. These are typically people with lots of complex things going on, so the returns are not the “1040-EZ” kind.
I took Mom for her periodic eye-poke, but this time we went to the closer hospital instead of the one at the other end of Jerusalem. It was a much more pleasant experience (for me, anyway). But it still took the better part of the day.
Then Thursday night, some of our peace-partners in Gaza launched rockets at Tel Aviv and the vicinity. The IDF responded by hitting 100 Gazan military targets. This is a “developing situation”, so stay tuned. My opinion is that Ḥamas just wants to ensure that Netanyahu is reelected; if they don’t, they’re going about it all wrong.
And finally, I’ve been trying to find a source here in Israel for a sheet of aluminum cut to a specific size. I’ve exhausted my resources so far… any suggestions? The reason I need it is that we bought a new “plata” (shabbat hot-plate) last week, and it is unevenly hot as well as too hot. So I want an aluminum sheet to distribute the heat evenly. The place I last purchased sheet metal doesn’t do that anymore. Maybe I just need to scavenge…
Stuff and nonsense:
- A British MP wants all knives to have GPS tracking embedded. Because violence. The next step, of course, would be to embed GPS chips in all rocks.
- The PA President for Life, Mahmoud Abbas, hopes Gantz will be the next PM of Israel. Probably because Iranian intelligence hacked his phone. I think his chances are waning after that revelation (at least, I hope so).
- Global cooling is apparently a real threat. An extended cooling period will make crops fail, and harsh winters will kill more people than warmish winters.
- The “Green New-Deal”: for thee, but not for AOC.
- Why Socialism fails even in theory. Never mind that it’s failed in practice. Every. Single. Time.
- Russia is nyet happy about encrypted email. They’ve taken action to restrict access to ProtonMail; but seem to have forgotten that there are a lot of other ways to send encrypted messages.
I made a new release of 8th this week, which is mostly bug fixes. Turns out, I have users who use 8th and find bugs. Hate bugs, but love the users who find them!
We had mostly sunny skies this week, but Thursday developed a nice rain system and we’re scheduled to continue with the rain through shabbat into Sunday.
This week’s menu will include:
homemade ḥalla and pitot,
chicken with lentils and spinach,
rice,
tuna croquets,
potato kugel,
egg salad,
various salatim,
and fruit.
Until next time,
shabbat shalom!
