I attended a birthday party for my friend and teacher Shelomo ben-Avraham of Mechon Mamre fame. In honor of this, his 80th, a number of his students, teachers, and colleagues joined in. I got to see some friends I hadn’t seen in quite a while, which was very nice. I’m sure he was a bit embarrassed by the praises, but he does deserve them.

There was one oddity, though. His wife asked me to pick up a woman if I could, on my way to their home. So I did. It turned out this woman not only knows them — in fact, she introduced them! — she’s also a childhood friend of another friend of mine who lives here in Ma’ale Adumim (the ones who made ʿaliya at the same time, on the same plane, as we did)! It’s really a small world.

While last shabbat was Esther’s birthday according to the Hebrew calendar, she’s got another few days until her Gregorian calendar expiration date. Since Sarah would have difficulty making it on the actual birthday, we decided to meet for an early lunch at a nice place in Jerusalem (in just a few hours from when this is being written). Now that the “mask mandate” is over, it’s a whole new world!

I made a new release of 8th this week, mainly with bug fixes uncovered while working on the “Weather Station” project. I’ve also been making continual progress with that: currently handling two sensors simultaneously (one for inside, one for outside), among other things.

We returned to the podiatrist so Mom’s toe stitches could be removed. After more than a year of dealing with this toe, it looks like we might be getting somewhere, finally. It still needs more care, but progress, at least, is being made!

And we do now have a government here in the Land, though by the slimmest of margins. As to its longevity, well, time will tell…

The weather was fine this week, slightly below average temperatures. It is supposed to continue to be fine for at least a few more days.

In honor of the birthday-girl, Ron’s in the kitchen this shabbat. Our diners will enjoy:
homemade ḥalla (not from Ron), spicy orange soup, slow-cooked brisket, baked breaded eggplant and ṭeḥina, roasted eggplant in ṭeḥina, roasted peppers, egg salad, tangy celery salad, subtle leek salad, perhaps a few more salatim, and my Infamous Chocolate Bundt with a chocolate sauce (heretofore unknown, but sure to become a favorite!).

Until next time,
shabbat shalom!

The “sauce” was supposed to have been icing, but it didn’t set sufficiently…
