Today is my mom’s shloshim, the thirtieth day of public mourning prescribed by Jewish law. After today, for the ensuing year, the public aspects of mourning become very much more subtle: no attending parties, no purchasing new clothing — things which aren’t difficult for me, personally. But I found the “no clipping of hair and nails during the shloshim” surprisingly tough. Not that I’m overly concerned with my appearance by any means (as my children and wife can attest); but there’s good reason for me to keep my hair short, and I keep injuring myself with my nails!
Anyway, Esther and I have made significant progress in reclaiming our room, and will be able to move back in, in a week and a half. It’s certainly been a process, and not a good one for my “tennis elbow”.
Among other things, we went to IKEA to get replacements for our decades-old-and-crumbling bedroom furniture. That was about as unenjoyable a shopping trip as I can remember. It’s not that IKEA is expensive (the ones in Israel are, in fact), or that it’s a huge space (which it is), but rather that you’re forced to walk the entire length and breadth of the store just to find out where the stupid items you already selected are located in the warehouse area. I hate that store, I really do.
Stuff and nonsense:
- The Texas synagogue aftermath: Bari Weiss writes about being Jewish in an unraveling America. Matt Walsh talks about the FBI’s inability to discern the motives of the attacker. And “a Bri’ish man” visits a Texas synagogue. There’s a lot to digest there, I think.
- I know, you just can’t believe it’s true, but it is: the gov’t is using COVID data to track people, outside of the specific stated purpose of, well, tracking COVID cases.
- Mike Solana has something to say about the neurotic COVID policies.
- A very interesting interview by the Triggernometry guys: Carl Benjamin, on big government, immigration, and censorship.
- The folks at Norton now automatically install a “cryptominer” along with their antivirus suite. That would be bad enough, but it’s difficult to uninstall, and if you do actually “mine coins” with it, Norton keeps 15%. That, there, is chutzpah!
I made a new release of 8th this week, the first of 2022. I also made progress with my client’s project, and I wrote a bit about how I’m using 8th to make that project more secure.
In the course of cleaning up the room, we’ve gone through the closet and removed all the clothes which were there. I had no idea Mom had so many clothes, since she only ever wore half a dozen items the entire time she was here. We’ve given a significant portion of them to a “gemach”, and the less wearable ones we’ve put in the “clothes recycling” bin.
A surprising find was my Dad’s USMC jacket from WW2, with insignia and medals. I don’t think Mom even knew she had brought it with her; she certainly never wore it!
This shabbat we’ll try out:
homemade breads,
chicken soup with kneidlach,
baked chicken,
roasted potatoes,
various salatim,
and brownies.
Until next time,
shabbat shalom!
