It’s sure been a cold one! Jerusalem got several inches of snow, and we on the periphery of the Judean Desert were able to see the snow on the tops of the hills of East Jerusalem.

Over here there was no snow; but it rained hard and long, and the temperatures were hovering around 5C. Cold!

Oh, sure, I know what you’re thinking: “that’s not nearly as cold as where I’m at!”. Well, bully for you! In fact, Esther reminded me that we spent twenty years in a climate where the normal temperature was 5 or so, and if it got to 10 it was “T-shirts and shorts weather”. Well, not here, son; not here…

Your house probably has insulation and a proper heating system, doesn’t it? It also probably doesn’t have random leaks in the roofing which only show up under hard rains, and which nobody has been able to figure how to repair. The good news is that our winter is not very long.

The Randomizer:

  • Travelers to Australia were made to hand over phones and pass-codes to their border police. Oz isn’t the only place that does that BTW: the US TSA also does this, though not as frequently.
  • The JPost’s helpful list of seven signs you may already have had COVID. To be fair to the JPost (which is not my inclination), the CDC has their own list of vague symptoms which “might be COVID”. Pretty much any “cold” or “flu” symptom, up to and including actual death, is a “possible COVID symptom”. Better safe than sorry, panic up!
  • The “Great Reset” is being followed up by The Great Narrative. You might be excused for thinking this is “conspiracy theory”, but no: it is very real. Also, Klaus Schwab really looks and acts the part of a Bond villain. Davos could benefit from a properly timed mini-nuke…
  • Observing the US from overseas, the reality of Biden’s failure is undeniable. I predict a truly massive fail for the Dems at the midterm elections. Hopefully that will help the US economy recover somewhat, but unless the current administration’s policies are reversed, that’s unlikely. Let’s go, Brandon!
  • If you’ve been concerned about the lack of “representation” in your favorite candies, fear no more! The Mars Corporation is taking steps to ensure M&Ms are diverse. Because most of us lay awake at night worrying about the lack of diversity in our artificially colored chocolate lentils.
  • CNN, not wishing to lose its downward momentum, publishes an opinion piece criticising Jamie Oliver for veering into cultural appropriation. It’s quite an important issue, you know? People might be confused that the very white Oliver is actually Chinese, or that his food really represents legitimately authentic Chinese cuisine. Or something.

As for us? Well, we finished preparing the room, and are taking possession of a new bed on Sunday. So we’ll be re-inhabiting our room next week, B”H. In the meantime, the moisture has been seeping through the nefarious cracks in the building so one wall of our room is “moist”. At least we won’t need a humidifier.

And before you ask: yes, yes we have had professionals look at the situation. Three or four of them, in fact, over the years; to no avail. But I’m feeling lucky, and this year will be the Year the Leakage Stopped. insha’allah.

The cold and wet is scheduled to remain over shabbat, with clearing and some warming to seasonal averages.

This shabbat our menu will consist mostly of:
homemade ḥalla, cauliflower-potato soup, bœuf bourguignon, rice pilaf, lentil stew, pea salad, tuna salad, various salatim, and cookies.

Until next time,
shabbat shalom!
