ḥodesh ṭov!

We’re mostly back to work. One day was “yom hashoʼah” during which we were treated to insincere expressions of “never again” from the world’s leaders. Most particularly grating was the predominant motif of “millions of people died”. Indeed: which “people”, in particular, died most of all? But I digress…

After having sent off the most recent version of my client’s project for review, I turned my efforts towards improving various aspects of 8th. Esther turned her efforts towards keeping clients from paying more tax than required, in between bouts of knitting.

One day last week we went to get some shabbat supplies. I was astonished that my credit card was denied. After several attempts to use it, I called the CC company and was informed they’d blocked my card because someone had tried to purchase Facebook adverts with it. They blocked it after just one attempt — how they determined it was a fraudulent attempt, I don’t know, but I was impressed. They sent me the replacement card by courier a few days later, and though I hate to admit it of a CC company — that was excellent customer service.

Other stuff:

It’s the new month of ʼiyar today, and the end of Ramadan as well. “ʿeid al-fiṭr” as our cousins know it. Hopefully a peaceful conclusion to a quite typically violent Ramadan. This coming week we’ll celebrate our Memorial Day as well as Israel’s 75th independence day, the one leading seamlessly into the other. In preparation for which we’ve got flags to hang and meat to be grilled.

We did some clearing in the garden, most notably cutting back the ivy covering the wall between us and our neighbor. I also transplanted the (sole) bean which had grown too long to support itself. I’m not confident it will survive, so I plan on sowing a few directly in the ground. My survival skills are not looking very good at the moment!

Weather: well, we had our ups and downs. A dusty heat-wave for a few days, during which we eventually did turn on the AC. Then the temperatures plummeted and it “rained” a bit. Now it’s actually chilly in the house. Supposedly it will be pleasant for shabbat, warming gradually through the week.

This shabbat and rosh ḥodesh:
home-made ḥalla, brisket, roasted potatoes and yams, various salatim, and chocolate-chip bars.

Until next time,
shabbat shalom and ḥodesh ṭov!
