Another busy week, though not the social whirlwind last week was.

I found out after shabbat that Bram Moolenaar (the inventor and maintainer of “vim”, a programmers’ editor) had died. Quite a shock, since I’ve actually worked with him on vim in the past (over the past 25+ years or so), and he was only slightly older than I am. This gave me the impetus to do what I knew needed to be done.

That being: setting up things so that if I am seriously disabled or deceased, my own projects can continue, and access to my systems can be easily handed to whoever needs to have it. So I spent a couple days perfecting my “dead-man switch” software (in 8th, of course!). It works by monitoring a few things which I regularly use, and if I’ve not done any of them for two weeks, sends me an email with a link to click to prove I’m alive and well. If after three days I haven’t responded, it assumes I’m no longer capable of responding, and sends emails with instructions to the various people I want to notify of my change in status. A bit macabre, but necessary.

Part of that included the release of “cryptor”, a simple encryption program (in 8th…) which I’m now using instead of GnuPG for my own projects.

Various items of note:

Esther got our US taxes in order and posted them to the authorities. Thank you so much for requiring us to uselessly report income, Uncle Sam!

Another manly project commenced this week: the proper Argentinian parilla para asado, or as we call it, a “barbecue grill”. I took inventory of the various metal scrap I had, and realized I needed to purchase “L-angle” stock. So I did, and the hardware store helpfully cut it to the length I wanted. I was going to wait until next week before doing anything else, but the Muse overcame me, and I spent a couple hours cutting scrap and tack-welding the bits. Next week, B”H, I’ll finish it up and have something to show you.

The weather was nice this week, but we’re in for a real doozy of a heat wave this weekend. 38-40C high in Jerusalem, so probably as high as 44C in our cozy little town. Not nice, I definitely do not approve!

We’ve been invited out for a meal this shabbat during the heat of the day. For the rest, we’ll have:
homemade ḥalla, za`atar chicken with sumac potatoes, roasted vegetables, various salatim, and ice-cream.

Until next time,
shabbat shalom!
