The weather last shabbat wasn’t as extreme as forecast, though still very hot. We had a half-hour trek back home from our hosts’ place, and made it despite the oppressive heat. Fortunately, Sunday’s weather wasn’t as extreme as forecast.

But during shabbat, the “rash” on my arm (which had appeared a week before) expanded to cover a significant portion of my upper arm. So, suitably alarmed (and abashed at not having heeded Esther’s prior advice), we went to “Terem”, the “urgent care” facility in our town, after shabbat.

There, the duty doctor diagnosed “cellulitis” and immediately gave me an IV of a strong antibiotic and ordered followup visits for continued IV antibiotic. The next day, I headed to our clinic and saw the nurse, who sent me to my doctor, who was the fourth or fifth person to chastise me for not having listened to my wife. She gave me a prescription for oral antibiotics to follow the IV treatment.

The upshot is: I’m still taking the antibiotics, and the rash has cleared, leaving several elevated (presumed) insect-bites. I’ve got a follow-up with my doctor next week, to see if any further treatment is needed. Moral of the story: don’t ignore spreading rashes (and listen to your spouse)!

Of note:

Esther had seen an ad for a shabbat remote” for A/C units, and asked me to look into it. I ordered two, and I can recommend them most heartily! Why? Because for one thing, they are easy to program. Secondly, they can handle up to 7 simultaneous programs. Third, because my fancy LG unit’s built-in timer only runs for one day, so we always have to use a mechanical timer on rosh hashanah and the like. And finally, because the unit in our bedroom is so complicated to program, we’ve never used anything but the mechanical timer. So far, these units work exactly as advertised.

Some manliness:

  • Did a tour of our roof with my neighbor and decided on a leak-stoppage plan. Also, replaced a leaking valve on my solar water-heater. More to come…
  • Finally got the stick-welding figured out! The BBQ grill (“parilla para asado”) is coming nicely together. More to come…

The weather is supposed to be just above normal for the season, e.g. hot, with a slight cooling in the next few days. Not enough to make a difference, though.

This shabbat we’ll try:
homemade ḥalla, homemade ḥummus, pargiot, rice pilaf, roasted vegetables, steak salad, various salatim, and brownies.

Until next time,
shabbat shalom and ḥodesh ṭov!
