We commemorated the first night of ḥannuka last night, and the recitation of sheheḥeyanu never seemed more poignant. Just two months have passed, and the world we thought we knew seems to have utterly disappeared.

Those we thought were friends yet never contacted us; and those we barely knew, who were anxious for our well-being. The “allies” who dropped us like red-hot coals; and the “enemies” who gave us comfort and support. We will not forget, and we will not forgive.

Indeed, the words we recite in the “hallel”: “Israel! Trust in God!” are ever more powerful when we realize how little we can trust those who are ostensibly our allies and friends. But our Guardian neither slumbers nor sleeps, nor is He a human who deceives.

Various and sundry:

Have you understood, yet? Have you awakened from your slumber?

As for us, well, we’ve carried on a “normal” life. Esther’s working, I’m trying to work and retire simultaneously. I’ve found some new relatives on my mother’s side. We’re starting to get ready to visit Daniela et. fam. soon. We’re shuttering my business. Lots of activity, signifying very little.

The weather was blustery and/or overcast most of the week. Temperatures are supposed to drop for shabbat with a chance of rain. The real rain is scheduled for Tuesday…

This shabbatsur la table:
homemade ḥallah, veggie soup, Moroccan chicken with olives, rice, various salatim, and apple cake.

Until next time,
shabbat shalom and ḥannuka sameaḥ!

May this “Festival of Lights” shine a light on the hostages and bring them forth from darkness into light. Amen!
