We’ve been busy all week, but for the life of me I can’t recall just what we were doing. Mainly, we’ve been preparing for our upcoming trip to see the Grands et. al.
Probably my memory was wiped when Israel retaliated for the Houthi attack on our airport. Or perhaps it was when India and Pakistan (both nuclear-armed powers) started getting frisky. Could it have been due to Putin and Xi cozying up to each other? Maybe because Trump declared the Houthis had given up (despite their denials)?
Nah, probably it’s just that my brain is tired. At least I did find a use for my set of Knuth, and I did major updates to the Mechon-Mamre site… I even got complimented on it!

I spent some time researching how to keep our car battery from “going flat” while we’re away, like it did the last time we went away.
PSA: those lovely and fuel-efficient “hybrid” cars have two batteries: a big one which is used to power the, well, “power train”; and a Lilliputian one which serves to keep the electronics running. Guess which one is needed to open the doors and start your car? Yeah, Lilliput. And the problem is, these cars are jam-packed with electronics which need to be “on” to some extent, so the wee little battery is always draining. Thus the problem: after a week or two or three, depending on the specific make and model, Lilliput is kaput.
I had a long conversation with our car dealer’s chief mechanic, who told me all the new (hybrid) cars are that way, and the only real solutions are either to have someone drive the car for 20 minutes each week, or to plug it into a “trickle charger”.
Now, back when I had issues with my previous (hybrid, different manufacturer) car, I had purchased a “solar trickle-charger” but was unable to use it on that car. However, it does seem to work with our current car (when I hook it up directly to the battery), so that is what we’ll do this time around.
Hoping Gulliver leaves Lilliput alone, this time!
The weather is going to be hot and hotter, peaking on the day we head for the Goldene Medina. We’ll stay inside this shabbat, not only because of the heat, but because I don’t want people sneezing on me before I fly.
This shabbat we’ve got a guest. He and we will dine upon:
pitot,
gefilte fish,
roast beef,
potato kugel,
pargiot,
rice,
roasted veggies,
various salatim,
and almond cake.
Until next time,
shabbat shalom!
