What a week! One day we went with the Grands et. fam. to the “American Dream” mall in New Jersey. Would not recommend: 0/10 — most especially if you, like me, try to avoid human beings. It was jam-packed, and absolutely enormous. The Grands enjoyed it, though, which was the point. Also, it had a number of kosher food establishments, which was nice.

Of course, I came down with a cold; but at least it’s fairly minor. Esther also got it, probably from me. Now my voice is going, so that’s great…

Esther and I went one morning to the local airport and signed up for “TSA PreCheck”, and paid our dues. We got approved the very next day (!), so hopefully our return flight experience in JFK will be smoother and less invasive.

In between-times, the Grands have utilized me as a hobby-horse, a tickle-machine, a story-inventor, and various other uses. The “story-inventor” phase began when they chose a character name of “Calvin Brownstein” and asked me to tell them stories around that character. So I came up with a couple stories which they liked. Then, each of the twins decided to “write books” about that character. I’m not sure I understand the plot-twists they’ve written in, but they get A+ grades for inventiveness.

Various and sundry:

The most peculiar event of the week was my receipt of a “WhatsApp” message from an ex-girlfriend. A woman I went out with forty-five years ago and broke up with probably 44 years ago. There are many disturbing aspects to this: first, that she was able to get my phone number and WhatsApp me. Then, that I had left my phone number up on Facebook so it was possible to find (most embarrassing!). Further that she “didn’t forget me” (her words) after nearly half a century, and then that she got angry when I didn’t answer her immediately.

What’s that about “a woman scorned”? Anyway, my wife and daughters found this event most amusing, at my expense (is there any other kind of expense?).

We were snowed-in last shabbat, and got 5-7 inches of snow. We stayed in, of course! The weather here in the Exile this week will be cold and clear, definitely warm coat time.

This shabbat we’re at Daniela’s again, and will enjoy:
homemade ḥalla, chicken soup, French roast with onions, chili-lime chicken, wild rice with Portobello mushrooms, roasted green beans, roasted eggplant, and banana bread.

Until next time,
shabbat shalom!
