So among other things this week, I continued with the “vibe-coding” exercise I mentioned last week. As of today, I’ve got a very functional genealogy program which has features I’ve been wanting for years. I’ll do a bit more development on it, and probably make a packaged release of it next week for public consumption. It’s that good!

My takeaway from this exercise is that AI is an extremely powerful tool if used properly, even though it can be quite frustrating at times. Among its strengths are the ability to consume vast quantities of information about a particular issue in a few seconds, and produce a solution which is reasonable. This genealogy project would have taken me upwards of two months to write on my own, and it’s come together in less than a week. That’s a force-multiplier, and no mistake.

As to what that means for the future of my profession, I’m not really sure. I would encourage young people to go into the (physical) trades like carpentry, electrical work, plumbing, etc. Those pay well and aren’t going to be easily replaced.

Of some note:

In the “don’t let this happen to you” department: PBS (America’s “public broadcaster”) lost access to 50TB of data (that’s fifty trillions of bytes!), comprising 70 years of TV history. Oops! Guess they couldn’t have spent a few $$$ on an actual physical backup system and a disaster recovery plan. I would cry, but my schadenfreude at seeing those pompous windbags make such a basic error just… well, let’s just say it’s one more item on my Yom Kippur list…

I’ve also resumed work on the “English translation of Mishne Torah”, since my Zoom lessons have caught up with the text I’d done so far! The Lord works in mysterious ways.

We’re looking for some very hot weather going into shabbat, and staying above-average over the next days. Not a fan, but fortunately we’ve got fans…

This shabbat we’re rarin’ to have:
homemade ḥallah, baked herbed chicken, rice pilaf, roasted vegetables, gravlax, various salatim, and chocolate-chip bars.

Until next time,
shabbat shalom!
