Hi, again!
Back to a mostly normal week this time, though the weather stayed cooler than usual for the season. Sarah finally went back to school, and our house returned to its accustomed schedule. Daniela and Jeremy went on vacation, and I went back to work.
Esther has become a knitting-maniac. It started innocently enough, with a hat for Sarah, a scarf for me. Then she made a “cowl” for herself, and has progressed to making herself a pair of fingerless gloves. Well, she’s only done one so-far, but presumably its mate will soon appear.
A week or so ago, I went to get a new eyeglass prescription. My distance-vision has been getting worse, making it difficult for me to read traffic signs at a distance. So they prescribed “multifocal” lenses for me, and I got the glasses this week. It’s a challenge to get used to them, but they work really nicely for distance. One problem is that you need to move your head, not your eyes, to adjust for different distances — and that is very unnatural. Another problem is that I’ve noticed they seem to accentuate “floaters”, which is very distracting. In the meantime, I’ve discovered a much (!) cheaper source of glasses, and I think I’ll order an extra pair to see if it’s better to just get a prescription locally and order from these guys.
What else? Well, one night this week I was in enough pain that I couldn’t sleep. Turns out, I somehow messed up my sacroiliac joint. It is, literally, a pain in the butt. I’m still taking medication to try to control the pain, and I think I’ll try to see a chiropractor next week to help remove its source. Man, it hurts! Although to be fair, it doesn’t hurt as much as getting eaten by piranhas.
I’ve been working hard on getting the “second beta” of 8th ready. Still have another week or so to go, as this week was spent mostly on fixing obscure problems which caused it to be “unstable”. In case you didn’t know, “unstable” software is something only governments can get away with. So now that it’s in a “good place”, I’m finishing the basic “word set” — that is, the set of features that the final product will have. I’m also working on more documentation, which is probably the most time-consuming thing.
In addition, our business consultant keeps recommending us to others of his clients. Yesterday, one such gave me a call, and is presumably going to call me back today to discuss a possible contract. That’s good on the one hand, since our income has taken a distinct drop since I’ve gone on half-rations. But on the other hand, it will give me less time to work on the projects I want (and need) to do. On the third hand, if I get enough business I’ll need to hire people — and then I’ll personally have more free time (perhaps). Ah, what to do?
My nephew’s made it back to Israel for the third time in just over a year! I think he likes it here… anyway, he’ll be here this shabbat along with a friend of his. In addition, we’ve got Sarah’s friend RivQua and the three of us. We’ll keep ‘em all fed with:
homemade ḥallah,
potato-leek soup,
roasted chicken,
roasted potatoes,
mushroom bourekas,
split-pea soup,
radish salad,
avocado-hearts-of-palm salad,
cabbage salad,
roasted eggplant,
orzo salad,
slow-cooked roast,
strawberries-and-cream
and marble-cake.
Until next week,
shabbat shalom!
