January 23rd (See this week's devar torah) | Comments or questions? Click here! |
It was a most intense week at the Aaron household. Meetings all week long, barely a moment for anything else. We did learn a lot, though; and that’s a good thing.
We started the week meeting one of our friends who’s been working on managing and promoting web-sites for a long time. She gave us a lot of advice on things we should and shouldn’t do, as well as pointers to tools to use in our search for “spreading the word” about 8th.
One of those tools is “Google Analytics”. That lets you track how many people are visiting your site and how long they’re there, what parts of your site they read and where they’re from. A lot of very useful information. Even better, it lets you see the state of “visitors” to your site in “real time”, e.g. as they come and go. Really a cool tool, and very useful. The best part about it is that you can see how people are coming to your site, e.g. what sites referred them to you.
As part of the “roll out”, we had posted on LinkedIn and Facebook, and we did see traffic from those sites. Not nearly as much as I would have expected, given how big those sites are. Then I posted a little blurb in a tech magazine called “LXer”. That generated a lot of traffic; as much in a few hours as we had seen from FB and LinkedIn combined, just about. We ended up with a peak of 99 people on our forum at once, where the previous peak had been 9. So I need to write more articles, because the more people come to the site (and download our product) the more likely we’ll have paying customers.
I also met this week with a potential client. It was an interesting meeting; but the most interesting part was being asked by the CEO whether we could point to any applications using 8th which had been published in the Apple Store. The reason that’s interesting, is that Apple is very tough on apps, and rejects them for all sorts of reasons… including that they don’t like the way the app was built. So we had to honestly answer “no, we can’t”, which lead us to the conclusion that we need to pretty quickly get our zemanim Android application rewritten using 8th, and get a version on the Apple Store as a proof-of-concept. That’s for the upcoming week’s work.
We met (twice) with a patent attorney, who gave us a lot to think about. Not only because driving to Tel Aviv and back is a big time-consumer, but also because it’s not clear whether or not we can or should pursue the final patent. We need to give that some more thought before making our final decision.
In other news: we helped Dinah move out; she’s now ensconced on the very far side of Jerusalem from us, near the school she’s attending. Sarah went to school. Esther almost finished the sweater she’s been knitting. We tried unsuccessfuly to view the comet Lovejoy. And the A/C in Sarah’s room is still working, B”H. Oh, on that topic: the executive at that company called me this week to make sure that everything was fine, and gave me a special phone number to call in case I had further problems. It pays to complain to the top people…
This shabbat we’re back to the nukular family. On the menu:
chicken with rice,
matsa ball soup,
roasted yams and potatoes,
veggie cholent,
smoked salmon,
and trifle.
Until next time,
shabbat shalom!
