¡Feliz Cinco de Mayo! To celebrate, we made burritos and Margaritas yesterday. The astute reader will have noted that yesterday was the 4th, and there’s no official “Cuarto de Mayo” celebration. But the rule is that if 5May falls on a Friday, the celebration is advanced to the preceding Thursday. I don’t make the rules. OK, actually I do…

Several weeks ago, the ice-cream machine we’ve had for a very long time gave up its ghost, so this past week we ordered and received a new one. We tested it by making a pareve mango sorbet, which came out so good we couldn’t believe it. No more Strauss “ice cream” for us!

The garden clean-up proceeds apace. This week, I pruned one of our olive trees (both of them are badly overgrown). That took three days of effort, so I got a decent workout. Between that and my two or three times daily use of the exercise machine, I expected to have lost weight. I haven’t, thank you very much.

Various things:

  • The US has funneled the strategic ammunition reserve held in Israel to Ukraine. Apart from the fact that the reserve is relied upon by Israel in the event of war, the purpose of that reserve is to resupply US troops should they need deployment in the Middle East. This strikes me as an extremely foolish, unwise, and dangerous decision. But I expect no less from the US.
  • Israel’s price-controls on basic items are causing a crisis among bakeries (as they did dairy producers in years past).
  • Matt Walsh: adults who enjoy Disney are seriously disturbed. He’s not wrong!
  • Triggernometry interviews Ben Shapiro. Pretty interesting.
  • And Bridget Phetasy interviews Agnieszka Pilat. A long but very interesting interview.

Esther and I both worked, as usual. However, because my client hadn’t given me the feedback needed to advance his task until yesterday, I spent most of the week working on improvements to “8th”. Not that I mind, but working for clients pays the bills.

The seedlings I started and transplanted have done well, by and large. The tomatoes look very robust, and the basil is building strength. However, the bean and cucumber I transplanted both suffered shock and wilted. So I replanted seeds in the target containers and the sprouted beans are really taking off!

Our weather was decent until the end of the week when a mini heat-wave started. It should abate in the afternoon with wind and dust, and then the next few days will be on the chilly side.

Our menu this shabbat includes:
home-made ḥalla, chicken schnitzel, baked yams, various salatim, and ice-cream.

Until next time,
shabbat shalom!
