Wow!  It was really a hot week -- in the 20s (upper 70s, low 80s F) - and I took a lot of heat (so to speak) this week over my (intended to be humorous) comment on global warming.  Why are {{wiki2|Global_warming|AGW}} enthusiasts so lacking in humor?  I'll address this more seriously below (not the lack of humor, but AGW -- which I had not intended to address at all).

{{heb|ה' ציווה '''וְיִקְחוּ-לִי תְּרוּמָה''' {{hcite|p/pt/pt0225.htm#2|שם ב}} -- כלל בני ישראל; בין בעלי ממון, בין עניים -- ייקח כל אחד מאשר תמצא ידו. לכן יש חומרים שיימצאו אצל עשירים, כגון זהב -- ויש שכל אחד יכול היה למצוא, כמו עורות בהמות. שהמשכן נועד לשרת את כל העם כולו, ולא רק את המושלים והעשירים. ה' יתברך שמו מאפשר לכל פרט מישראל לתרום למלאכת הקודש לפי יכולתו ובהתאם למצבו האישי.}}

Sarah was accepted to one of the programs she applied for, so that takes a load off her mind. And off ours. I've been frighteningly busy at work, so I get home and have no energy left. Esther has been trying to work but has been having problems connecting. And Daniela has been bravely trying to finish papers she's writing.  Chaucer, yeah.

{{heb|דבר אחר: יש מן המובא ששייך לעולם הדומם: אבנים ומתכות.  ויש שהוא מן הצומח: שש ועצי שיטים.  ויש שהוא בא מן החי: עורות עזים ותולעת שני.  יש שמובא כמעט "טבעי", כמו העצים. ויש שדורש עיבוד רב, כמו הקטורתהי"ת רוצה להדגיש שהוא שולט על כל הארץ ועל כל מה שבתוכו.}}

In preparation for our annual "Oscars" night, we watched '''[http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0499549/ Avatar]'''Here are our thoughts (and I do speak for all of us on this one):

{{heb|דבר אחר: לכל חומר יש תכונות המיוחדות לו. ואף-על-פי-כן, אי-אפשר לומר שאחד מהם חשוב מחברו או נעלה ממנו. כך גם בני ישראל. יש כוהן, לוי וישראל -- כל אחד עם תפקידו המיוחד לו.  יש תלמיד חכמים ומי שעדיין לו למד.  יש רופא וסנדלר, טבח וסופרכל אחד חיוני לתערובת הקדושה שהיא עם ישראל, ואין אחד יכול למלא את תפקידו של חברו. זה גם מרומז בקטורת הסמים, שאם חסר אפילו סם אחד אינו כשר. עם ישראל צריך את כל יהודי.}}

The movie is not original nor even derivative: it's a direct rip-off of "[http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0099348/ Dances With Wolves]" and "[http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0114148/ Pocahontas]", but set in space and with blue aliens. That wouldn't have been so terrible if the special effects had been "wow" mind-blowing. But for the half a BILLION dollar budget of this movie, we were extremely disappointed. "[http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0133093/ The Matrix]" was revolutionary. So was "[http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0088247/ The Terminator]" (both one and two, actually). But in ''Avatar'' the {{wiki2|Computer-generated_imagery|CGI}} creatures looked like CGI and the other effects were "ho-hum"I expected much better from Cameron (after all, he ''did'' do the ''Terminator'' movies...)

The dialog was puke-inducing.  Ignore the usual condescending lectures about how the (white) West is horrible and responsible for all the evils of the universe.  Every single line and plot point is cliché and ripped-off -- he even has the evil (mostly white, naturally) corporation hire mercenaries headed by a southern cracker "colonel". Seriously.

It's a shame that Cameron didn't turn his vaunted 3D technology on the characters themselves. They were all so lacking in depth that it was impossible to care about them. Sarah and I spent the first five minutes of the movie predicting the entire remainder -- and we were spot-on.  Not the worst movie I have ''ever'' seen, but it's close.  The two contenders for ''worst movie'' are "[http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0074486/ Eraserhead]" and "[http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0087182/ Dune]" (curiously, both David Lynch productions.  Hmm.) . Anyway, "Avatar" really is ''that'' bad.  However, some fools [http://thelede.blogs.nytimes.com/2010/02/16/avatar-on-the-west-bank/ were  inspired by it] this week.  Goes to show something I guess.

God commanded the Children of Israel to take Him an offering from a wide variety of substances, in order to build the sanctuary where He would dwell.  Some of the substances were very common, some extremely rare.  For example, the "taHash skins" no longer exist.  Why did God command they bring such a unique mix?

God commanded '''they take for Me an offering''' {{hcite|p/pt/pt0225.htm#2|ibid 2}} -- the entire Children of Israel; whether rich or poor -- each should bring whatever was available to him. Therefore there are some materials which were only to be found among the rich, like gold -- and there were others which anybody could have got, for example animal skins.  This is because the sanctuary was intended to serve the entire people, and not just the governing class or the wealthy.  God, may He be blessed, made it possible for each individual Israelite to contribute to the holy enterprise according to his ability and his personal situation.

Another explanation: some of the items were from the "mineral" kingdom: stones and metals.  And others were from the "vegetable" kingdom: linen and acacia wood.  Still others were from the "animal" kingdom: goat skins and scarlet (which dye came from a worm).  Some of the items were brought more or less "as-is", like the wood.  Some required a lot of preparation, for example the incense.  God may He be blessed wants to emphasize that He rules the entire world and over everything it contains.

Another explanation: each material has properties specific to it.  Nevertheless, it is impossible to say that one is more important than the other, or more elevated than it.  So too the Children of Israel.  There are Cohanim, Leviim and Israelites -- each with his one particular task.  There are Torah sages and those who have not yet studied.  There are doctors and cobblers, butchers and scribes.  Each is crucial to the holy mixture which is the Jewish people, and not one can fill the shoes of his fellow.  This is also hinted at by the "sweet incense", which if even one of its components is missing, is not fit for use.  The Jewish people needs each and every Jew.

Hi again!

Wow! It was really a hot week -- in the 20s (upper 70s, low 80s F) - and I took a lot of heat (so to speak) this week over my (intended to be humorous) comment on global warming. Why are AGW enthusiasts so lacking in humor? I'll address this more seriously below (not the lack of humor, but AGW -- which I had not intended to address at all).

In preparation for our annual "Oscars" night, we watched Avatar. Here are our thoughts (and I do speak for all of us on this one):

The movie is not original nor even derivative: it's a direct rip-off of "Dances With Wolves" and "Pocahontas", but set in space and with blue aliens. That wouldn't have been so terrible if the special effects had been "wow" mind-blowing. But for the half a BILLION dollar budget of this movie, we were extremely disappointed. "The Matrix" was revolutionary. So was "The Terminator" (both one and two, actually). But in Avatar the CGI creatures looked like CGI and the other effects were "ho-hum". I expected much better from Cameron (after all, he did do the Terminator movies...)

Not the worst movie I have ever seen, but it's close. The two contenders for worst movie are "Eraserhead" and "Dune" (curiously, both David Lynch productions. Hmm.) . Anyway, "Avatar" really is that bad. However, some fools were inspired by it this week. Goes to show something I guess.

  • How are the Na'vi and the Palestinians the same? Both are fictional peoples.

Until next week,
Shabbat shalom!
