וַיְהִי בַבֹּקֶר, וַתִּפָּעֶם רוּחוֹ, וַיִּשְׁלַח וַיִּקְרָא אֶת-כָּל-חַרְטֻמֵּי מִצְרַיִם, וְאֶת-כָּל-חֲכָמֶיהָ; וַיְסַפֵּר פַּרְעֹה לָהֶם אֶת-חֲלֹמוֹ, וְאֵין-פּוֹתֵר אוֹתָם לְפַרְעֹה  (בראשית מא:ח)

ממש מזעזע: פרעה קורא לכל החרטומים שבמצריים, ולכל חכמיה. הוא ביקש מכל אחד ואחד מהם לדעת מה פתרון החלום שחלם. אותו החלום כל כך הפריע לו, עד שהסכים להתייעץ עם "נער עברי", עם עבד מסכן. אף אחד מחכמי מצריים לא הצליח לפתור את החלום של פרעה, ואילו העבד השנוא כן פתר אותו!

במושגים שלנו היום, זה כאילו היינו מכנסים את כל המדענים הכי גדולים שבעולם, ושואלים אותם שאלה מדעית עמוקה. ואחרי שנכשלו לפתור את השאלה, פלוני אלמוני מוכר הפלאפל לא רק ענה על השאלה, אלא נתן תשובה מבריקה. האם לאחר מקרה כזה לא היינו תוהים מה תועלת יש באותם המדענים? ובפרשתנו, איך היה אפשר לפרעה להמשיך לסמוך על חכמיו וחרטומיו? הלא ברור לחלוטין שכל ה"מדע" של מצריים היה סתם שטויות ללא תועלת?

באמת, קשה מאד לצאת מן המוכר מילדות ולהשכיל ולפקוח עיניים למציאות כמו שהיא. בכל התורה, רק אחדים גדלו בין עובדי עבודה זרה ועזבו את טעותם -- למשל, אברהם אבינו ויתרו. פרעה, כמו רוב בני האדם, לא היה מסוגל להבין שתפיסת עולמו שגוייה והזויה. ובוודאי לא היה משנה את התפיסה הזאת בגלל דבריו של עבד עברי אחד. לנו כדי לזכור שאמת אפשר למצוא גם אצל ה"קטן" כמו ה"גדול", ולהתייחס לקטן כמו שמתייחסים לגדול.

And it came to pass in the morning that his spirit was troubled; and he sent and called for all the magicians of Egypt, and all the wise men thereof; and Pharaoh told them his dream; but there was none that could interpret them unto Pharaoh  (Gen 41:8)

It is really astonishing: Pharaoh called all the magicians of Egypt, and all of its wise men. He asked each of them what the interpretation of his dream was. That same dream disturbed him so much that he agreed to consult a "Hebrew youth", a lowly slave. Not one of the sages of Egypt managed to interpret Pharaoh's dream, but the hated slave did!

In modern terms this would be similar to us gathering all the greatest scientists in the world, and asking them some deep scientific question. And after they fail to answer, suddenly Joe Schmo the falafel vendor not only answers the question, but gives a brilliant answer. Were such a thing to happen to us, would we not wonder what use all the scientists were? In our portion, how was it possible for Pharaoh to continue relying on his sages and magicians? After all, wasn't it absolutely clear that all the "science" of Egypt was just bunk and totally useless?
