Irritating adventure update: as mentioned in last week’s blog, I made a stupid mistake when purchasing flour for maṣoth, neglecting to tell the vendor I needed KLP flour. I contacted them and they said they would try to have their delivery person meet me and exchange the flour. I’m happy to report that they did just that, and I was able to acquire the correct flour merely by meeting their person in Jerusalem.

Dodged that bullet!

We visited Sarah and Yarin, since we’ve no idea when we’ll have another opportunity in the near-term. Sarah regaled us with tales of her experiences with her new employer, making me very glad I’m self-employed. Though, to be honest, I have issues with clients similar to those she has with her boss.

I took mom for a double-clinic visit one morning, both clinics dealing with her feet. By the time we got back home, we were both exhausted and her feet were sore. All in all, a day I could have lived without.

Over the past two weeks, I’ve been working on updating the 8th website. Yesterday I finally released the new version to the public. Among other things, it’s much “lighter”, meaning it loads a lot faster. I completely rewrote it from the ground up, removing a lot of “propaganda” and making it simpler while keeping the important information. I also made sure it works well on mobile devices. Please have a look and let me know what you think.

I also rewrote the bits that are “behind the scenes” code. When I originally wrote the site mid-2014, I was adapting other people’s code. This time, with a lot more experience in the security aspects of websites, I significantly improved the code bits and the security precautions. The CTO of Gab might learn a few things.

Various tidbits:

  • What has Israel learned from its battle with COVID?
  • More antisemitism in America: Frontier Airlines forced a plane to ground after apparently targeting a Chasidic couple whose 18 month-old baby wasn’t masked. Unsurprisingly, I could only find a reference to this story in the Jewish press.
  • An excellent article on why the author is sick of hearing about “systemic racism” etc.
  • Monty Python perfectly predicted the “Equality Act”.
  • Can a vaccinated person still spread coronavirus? Several Israeli research teams think the answer is, “no”. That’s good news!
  • And Matt Walsh on the gender-identity struggles of Mr Potato Head.

I’ll just mention that I used to be a Nespresso-denier. But since Sarah gave us a machine, I’ve come to realize that while their coffee is relatively expensive, their service really is top-notch. On the other hand, their website is irritatingly slow; perhaps I should upgrade it for them…

This week’s weather was unremarkable, a bit below average temperatures. For shabbat we're expecting dry and warmer weather, above average temperatures. Sunny, in any case.

This shabbat we’ll likely experience the joys of:
ḥalla, orange soup, moussaka, roasted veggies, various salatim, and some kind of dessert.

Until next time,
shabbat shalom!
